Long COVID: post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 with a cardiovascular focus

Betty Raman et al.

Summary: Long COVID, characterized by persistent COVID-19 symptoms beyond 3 months, is expected to significantly affect the lives of millions worldwide. Cardiopulmonary symptoms are common, along with cardiovascular abnormalities such as inflammation, myocardial infarction, and arrhythmias. The pathophysiological mechanisms behind delayed complications are still not well understood, and COVID-19 is anticipated to alter the long-term trajectory of chronic cardiac diseases. Research is ongoing to evaluate treatment strategies for long COVID and its associated cardiovascular sequelae.

Summary: This study demonstrates the association between COVID-19 and myocardial infarction (MI), and the importance of cardiometabolic and noncardiometabolic multimorbidity in increasing the risk of COVID-19 infection and MI complications.

Coronary circulatory function with increasing obesity: A complex U-turn

Anand Upadhyaya et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore and characterize alterations in coronary circulatory function in relation to increasing body weight with medically controlled cardiovascular risk factors and metabolically unhealthy obesity. The study found that hyperemic MBF progressively decreased in overweight and obese groups, but increased again in the group of morbidly obese individuals comparable to normal weight, indicating contrasting effects of abdominal versus subcutaneous adipose tissue on coronary circulatory function.

Prognostic value of copeptin and mid-regional proadrenomedullin in COVID-19-hospitalized patients

Rita Indirli et al.

Summary: This study assessed the predictive value of copeptin and MR-proADM for in-hospital outcomes in COVID-19 patients. The results showed that both copeptin and MR-proADM could predict mortality, complications, and length of stay. They may be useful for early risk stratification and care intensification in COVID-19 patients.

Myocardial injury in patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia: Pivotal role of inflammation in COVID-19

Francesco Melillo et al.

Summary: Through analyzing the clinical characteristics of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, it was found that age, chronic kidney disease, cancer, and C-reactive protein levels were independently associated with cardiac injury, and patients with CI had a higher mortality rate.

Prognostic Relationship Between Coronary Artery Calcium Score, Perfusion Defects, and Myocardial Blood Flow Reserve in Patients With Suspected Coronary Artery Disease

Krishna K. Patel et al.

Summary: The study assessed the prognostic importance of MBFR, perfusion defects, and CACS in patients with suspected coronary artery disease. Results showed that MBFR had the best predictive ability for death risk, with MBFR<2 associated with increased risk even in patients with CACS of 0.

Microvesicles released from activated CD4+ T cells alter microvascular endothelial cell function

Daria Vdovenko et al.

Summary: The study revealed that CD4(+) T cells release a significant amount of microvesicles enriched with proteins related to immune responses, inflammation, and apoptosis upon receptor-mediated activation. These microvesicles disrupt microvascular endothelial function and barrier permeability, potentially contributing to tissue inflammation.

Prognostic implications of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio in COVID-19

Sara J. Ruiz et al.

Summary: NLR, as a marker of endothelial dysfunction, may be useful in identifying patients with a poor prognosis in hospitalized COVID-19 cases. Patients with worse outcomes were older, had significantly higher NLR values at admission, greater increase in Peak NLR, and higher increasing speed of NLR compared with follow-up patients.

Vascular alterations among young adults with SARS-CoV-2

Stephen M. Ratchford et al.

Summary: This study found significantly lower vascular function and higher arterial stiffness in young adults weeks after testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 compared to healthy controls. These results suggest significant vascular effects persist in young adults weeks after contracting SARS-CoV-2.

MR-proADM as marker of endotheliitis predicts COVID-19 severity

Luis Garcia de Guadiana-Romualdo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between circulating mid-regional proadrenomedullin (MR-proADM) levels and the prognosis of COVID-19 patients, and found that MR-proADM was the best predictor for death and disease progression in these patients.
