Volumetry improves the assessment of the vestibular aqueduct size in inner ear malformation

Nora M. Weiss et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the volume of the vestibular aqueduct (VA) in different types of inner ear malformations and compares 3D-reconstructed VA volume to 2D measurements. The results show that patients with inner ear malformations have larger VA volumes compared to controls. The study suggests that 3D reconstruction and VA volumetry may provide additional information for diagnosing enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) in cases with or without additional inner ear malformations.

CT imaging-based approaches to cochlear duct length estimation-a human temporal bone study

Tabita Breitsprecher et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the most reliable radiological imaging method and imaging processing software for measuring CDL, as well as accurately predict the insertion depth of CI electrode. The study found that all methods underestimated CDL length, with the otosurgical planning software-based method showing the best reliability.

Maturation of the internal auditory canal and posterior petrous bone with relevance to lateral and posterolateral skull base approaches

Robert C. Rennert et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the morphological characteristics of the internal auditory canal (IAC) and surrounding structures in children. The study found that the length of the IAC increased significantly between ages 8 and 11, while the diameter and midpoint diameter did not change significantly. Additionally, the distance from the porus to the common crus and the distance from the posterior petrosal surface to the posterior semicircular canal increased significantly during ages 12 to 15. These findings are important for safely exposing the IAC in children.

Cochlear and Vestibular Volumes in Inner Ear Malformations

Tabita M. Breitsprecher et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the volumes of the cochlea and vestibular system in different types of Inner Ear Malformations (IEMs) and finds that quantitative reference values for IEM obtained in this study were consistent with existing qualitative diagnostic characteristics. A cutoff value of less than 60 mm(3) for cochlear volume may indicate an abnormally small cochlea. Normal reference values for volumes of the cochlea and vestibular system may aid in diagnosing IEM.

Evaluating Common Cavity Cochlear Deformities Using CT Images and 3D Reconstruction

Nora M. Weiss et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare common cavity (CC) with normal anatomy inner ear. The findings revealed that most reported CC cases only represent the vestibular part of the inner ear, indicating cochlear aplasia.

Internal auditory canal hypoplasia associated with bilateral vestibulocochlear nerve aplasia and deviant facial nerve course: A case report and MRI findings

Luiz Ricardo Araujo Uchoa et al.

Summary: The evaluation of internal auditory canals and cochlea is crucial for cochlear implant surgery, especially using magnetic resonance imaging. This report presents a rare case of bilateral malformation of the internal auditory canals, emphasizing the importance of identifying and managing such anomalies.
