Changes in water column oxygen, estimates of productivity and the development of anoxia in a major embayment of the southern Benguela eastern boundary upwelling system

G. C. Pitcher et al.

Summary: The study in St Helena Bay revealed low-enrichment and high-retention characteristics, with productivity in surface waters limited by nutrients and light during the upwelling season. Further analysis showed that light attenuation plays a significant role in limiting subsurface productivity as well. Estimates indicated that the average water column productivity in the bay was 1.5 fold higher than past measurements from the late 1970s and 80s, with oxygen depletion locally enhanced due to entrainment and retention of biomass leading to higher carbon sequestration.

Spatial and Temporal Characteristics of California Commercial Fisheries from 2005 to 2019 and Potential Overlap with Offshore Wind Energy Development

Yi-Hui Wang et al.

Summary: As climate change continues to impact California, the state's commercial fisheries are undergoing changes, shifting from higher-biomass, lower-value species to lower-biomass, higher-value species. Despite a decline in total landings, the total value has remained relatively stable, with the northern half of the state contributing significantly to the overall value. Groundfish has been identified as the dominant fisheries in areas prioritized for potential offshore wind development in central and northern California.

Coastal eutrophication drives acidification, oxygen loss, and ecosystem change in a major oceanic upwelling system

Faycal Kessouri et al.

Summary: Global change is causing warming, acidification, and oxygen loss in the Southern California Bight, exacerbated by the discharge of anthropogenically enhanced nutrients from a coastal population of 23 million people. Through simulations, it was found that local land-based and atmospheric inputs, particularly those enhanced by human activities, drive biogeochemical changes, leading to increased phytoplankton biomass, primary production, and subsurface respiration rates in the coastal waters during summer.

Seasonal variability of upwelling and downwelling surface current patterns in a small coastal embayment

Nicholas Trautman et al.

Summary: This study used conditional averaging technique to investigate upwelling- and downwelling-driven circulation in a small coastal embayment in Central California. The results revealed that the upwelling circulation strengthened a convergent upwelling shadow front at this site, with important ecological ramifications.

Variable coastal hypoxia exposure and drivers across the southern California Current

Summary: Research has shown distinct latitudinal patterns of hypoxia exposure in kelp forest ecosystems across 13 degrees of latitude in the California Current upwelling system. Upwelling and respiration are identified as regional drivers of oxygen dynamics, with localized effects also observed.
