Current advances and future outlook on pretreatment techniques to enhance biosolids disintegration and anaerobic digestion: A critical review

Ushani Uthirakrishnan et al.

Summary: Anaerobic treatment is a popular method for converting organic waste into bioenergy, but hydrolysis is often a rate-limiting step due to the complexity and structure of the waste. Various pretreatment strategies are needed to enhance biogas production efficiency. Additionally, considerations of cost, inhibitors in biosolids, and strategies for overcoming these challenges are crucial for improving the overall process.

Integration of electrochemical and calcium hypochlorite oxidation for simultaneous sludge deep dewatering, stabilization and phosphorus fixation

Shaogang Hu et al.

Summary: A hybrid electrochemical process with Ca(ClO)(2) addition was proposed to improve sludge dewaterability, stabilization, and phosphorus fixation simultaneously. The process achieved efficient sludge stabilization, high phosphorus removal rate, and enhanced electrocoagulation for improved dewatering. The multifunctional effects were achieved through the cooperation of extracellular electrooxidation and active chlorine.

Electrochemical pretreatment (EPT) of waste activated sludge: Extracellular polymeric substances matrix destruction, sludge solubilisation and overall digestibility

Hao Huang et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge is commonly used for stabilization, mass reduction, and resource recovery, but its performance can be hindered by poor digestibility and slow degradation rate. A series of bench-scale tests using an innovative electrochemical pretreatment method showed that destruction of the EPS matrix and anaerobic digestibility can be enhanced, with the most significant improvement observed at 15V for 1.5 hours. Economic analysis indicated that a 1-hour, 12V EPT is the most economically feasible option.

A critical review of state-of-the-art electrocoagulation technique applied to COD-rich industrial wastewaters

Milad Mousazadeh et al.

Summary: Electrocoagulation (EC) is an emerging technology in groundwater and wastewater treatment that has been extensively studied in the past decade for its ability to effectively treat industrial wastewaters rich in chemical oxygen demand (COD). While the EC process shows promise in handling abundant volumes of wastewater with high COD levels, the high operation costs remain a significant drawback that needs to be addressed for wider adoption in wastewater treatment applications. More research in the field is necessary to improve and expand the application of EC technology.
