Recycling industrial food wastes for lipid production by oleaginous yeasts Rhodosporidiobolus azoricus and Cutaneotrichosporon oleaginosum

Silvia Donzella et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of using oleaginous yeasts to produce lipids from wastes generated by industrial food processing. The results show that both yeasts can utilize the main sugars present in the feedstock, with R. azoricus performing the best. By conducting a two-stage process in a bioreactor, R. azoricus achieved high lipid accumulation efficiency.

Kinetic modeling and process intensification of ultrasound-assisted extraction of d-limonene using citrus industry waste

Ramrao D. Khandare et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of ultrasonication as a process intensification tool for the extraction of d-limonene from Citrus limetta peel. By using ultrasonic-assisted extraction, the extraction time was reduced to 20 minutes compared to 185 minutes in a conventional process. The highest extraction yield of d-limonene was achieved using hexane as solvent, biomass:solvent ratio of 1:10, 2 mm particle size, agitation speed 300 rpm, temperature 60 degrees C, ultrasonic power 80 W, 50% duty cycle and frequency 25 kHz.

Characterization of cellular development and fatty acid accumulation in thraustochytrid Aurantiochytrium strains of Taiwan

Natarajan Velmurugan et al.

Summary: Two new thraustochytrid isolates from Taiwan mangroves, Aurantiochytrium sp. IMB169 and Aurantiochytrium sp. IMB171, were characterized for their long-chain saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids using transmission electron microscopy and flow cytometry with BODIPY staining. The study revealed a progressive accumulation of lipid products in both isolates, with IMB169 showing a high level of docosahexaenoic acid. Qualitative and analytical results were validated by gas chromatography, and a quantitative baseline was established for efficient bioprocessing methodology development.

Effects of tray drying, vacuum infrared drying, and vacuum microwave drying techniques on quality characteristics and aroma profile of orange peels

Hamza Bozkir et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of tray drying, vacuum infrared drying, and vacuum microwave drying on orange peels, revealing that vacuum microwave drying was the most effective in preserving quality characteristics and volatile compounds. Vacuum infrared drying caused the least destruction to volatile compounds, while tray drying was the most destructive.

Isolation and optimization of a novel thraustochytrid strain for DHA rich and astaxanthin comprising biomass as aquafeed supplement

Pratik R. Pawar et al.

Summary: A marine organism belonging to the Thraustochytrids family was isolated from mangroves in Mumbai, India, identified as Aurantiochytrium limacinum. Optimal process parameters resulted in the production of high oil content dry cell weight in a short cultivation period. This strain is a promising candidate for aquafeed production due to its ability to simultaneously synthesize DHA and astaxanthin.

Biotechnological production of lipid and terpenoid from thraustochytrids

Fei Du et al.

Summary: Thraustochytrids, as fungus-like protists, have drawn increasing attention due to their high lipid content and rapid growth rates. They have unique pathways for high DHA yield and can serve as industrial strains for DHA production, although improving strain performance alone is not sufficient for industrialization.

Exogenous Antioxidants Improve the Accumulation of Saturated and Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Schizochytrium sp. PKU#Mn4

Sai Zhang et al.

Summary: Species of Schizochytrium are well known for their ability to produce lipids intracellularly. In this study, seven different natural antioxidants were evaluated for their effects on lipid accumulation in Schizochytrium sp. PKU#Mn4. Mannitol showed the best increment in total fatty acids concentration, with interactions between mannitol and ascorbic acid resulting in increased saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids concentrations. This study provides insights into strategies for improving lipid accumulation in thraustochytrids using exogenous antioxidants and the underlying mechanisms.
