What drives urban carbon emission efficiency? - Spatial analysis based on nighttime light data

Guochang Fang et al.

Summary: This paper explores the factors that improve the efficiency of urban carbon emissions. The study finds that urban population expansion, economic growth, and R&D investment have positive effects on carbon emission efficiency (CEE), while industrial scale and agglomeration have adverse effects. Additionally, manufacturing agglomeration has a negative impact on local CEE but has a warning effect on neighboring regions. On the other hand, the agglomeration of the producer services industry significantly improves CEE and has a demonstration effect on adjacent regions.

Industrial Carbon Emission Efficiency of Cities in the Pearl River Basin: Spatiotemporal Dynamics and Driving Forces

Hongtao Jiang et al.

Summary: This study examines industrial carbon emission efficiency in the Pearl River Basin using three models and finds that the efficiency has steadily increased over the years, but there are still areas with low efficiency. The spatiotemporal pattern of the efficiency is solitary and spatially dependent. Factors such as industrialization level, openness to the outside world, science and technology level, energy consumption intensity, and productivity level influence the spatial variation of the efficiency, with productivity level, industrialization level, and openness to the outside world being the most important.

Urban carbon emission intensity under emission trading system in a developing economy: evidence from 273 Chinese cities

Kai Tang et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of China's pilot carbon trading markets on cities' carbon intensity, finding that the emission trading system significantly decreased carbon intensity in pilot cities and the reduction effect increased over time. The system achieved this through increasing the proportion of tertiary industry output value in GDP and decreasing energy intensity.

Is decoupling embodied carbon emissions from economic output in Sino-US trade possible?

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the decoupling of carbon emissions embodied in China's exports to the US is relatively stable and improving, while the decoupling in US exports to China is variable. The impact of the intermediate product structure on carbon emissions in US exports to China is higher than in China's exports to the US. Certain industries in China showed strong decoupling from 2013 to 2014, while knowledge-intensive manufacturing and service industries in the US had the best decoupling effect in exports to China. The driving factors of carbon emissions in trade between China and the US are similar, but differ in intensity. This study provides insights for decoupling carbon emissions in global trade, especially between developing and developed countries.

The effects of trade openness on decoupling carbon emissions from economic growth e Evidence from 182 countries

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that trade openness decreased carbon emissions in high-income and upper-middle-income countries, had no significant impact on lower-middle-income countries, and increased carbon emissions in low-income countries. This suggests that trade openness has a positive impact on decoupling economic growth from carbon emissions in rich countries, but has a negative impact on poor countries.

Identification of Poverty Areas by Remote Sensing and Machine Learning: A Case Study in Guizhou, Southwest China

Jian Yin et al.

Summary: Poverty, as an objective social phenomenon hindering human civilization, may be affected by topography in some developing countries or regions. Utilizing remote sensing data and the random forest machine learning method in Guizhou Province, China, the study showed that poverty identification is better with a combination of nighttime lights and geographical features compared to only nighttime lights. The dynamic spatiotemporal characteristics of identified poor counties in Guizhou Province from 2012 to 2019 revealed a consistent decrease in the number of poor counties and fragmentation of poverty-stricken areas, with faster reduction in the northeast and southwest regions.
