Bioremediation of oil-contaminated soil: Exploring the potential of endogenous hydrocarbon degrader Enterobacter sp. SAVR S-1

Shuo Sun et al.

Summary: This study selected Enterobacter as a representative to investigate the degradation potential of different concentrations of TPH in soil during bioremediation. Results showed that the addition of Enterobacter increased microbial abundance and decreased TPH concentration in oil-contaminated soils. The relative abundance of potential endogenous hydrocarbon degraders also increased significantly. Genomic analysis indicated the importance of genes related to aromatic compound metabolism and fatty acid metabolism in TPH bioremediation.

Genomic characterization of Enterobacter xiangfangensis STP-3: Application to real time petroleum oil sludge bioremediation

R. Muneeswari et al.

Summary: This study discusses the genomic characteristics of Enterobacter xiangfangensis STP-3, a novel biosurfactant producing petrophilic/petroleum hydrocarbon degrading strain, isolated from petroleum refinery oil sludge contaminated soil. The genome contains genes linked to the production of biosurfactants and the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons, contributing to its bioremediation potential. Experimental results showed that E. xiangfangensis STP-3 was able to degrade PHCs by 82% in 14 days during the bioremediation of real time petroleum oil sludge.

Remediation of Petroleum-Contaminated Soils with Microbial and Microbial Combined Methods: Advances, Mechanisms, and Challenges

Xin Sui et al.

Summary: The petroleum industry's development is driven by demand for petroleum and its by-products, but extraction and transportation processes may lead to soil contamination. Microbial remediation is a focus due to its convenience and low cost, although challenges such as inconsistent remediation effects and environmental consequences exist. Understanding pollutant sources, microbial degradation pathways, and influencing factors is crucial for selecting optimal remediation strategies.
