Multinationals, innovation, and institutional context: IPR protection and distance effects

Randolph Luca Bruno et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the innovative performance of highly inventive multinational enterprises (MNEs) is enhanced when their R&D activities are based in locations with stronger intellectual property rights (IPR) protection. Additionally, innovation performance deteriorates as the difference between the home and host-country IPR regimes increases. Moreover, the deterioration is more pronounced when MNEs locate their R&D activities in host economies with less strict IPR protection than their home country.

Will China's R&D investment improve green innovation performance? An empirical study

Jundi Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between R&D investment and green innovation performance in China, filling the gap in previous research that did not consider the effect of regional technological innovation level on this relationship. The results show that R&D investment has a positive impact on green innovation performance when the technological innovation level is within a specific range, but has a negative or sub-optimal impact when the technological innovation level is too low or too high.

Pathways towards environmental sustainability: exploring the influence of aggregate domestic consumption spending on carbon dioxide emissions in Pakistan

Muhammad Zubair Chishti et al.

Summary: This study identifies aggregate domestic consumption spending as a novel driver of carbon dioxide emissions in Pakistan based on data from 1973 to 2018. The results show that in the short run, aggregate domestic consumption spending has a significant effect on carbon dioxide emissions. Positive and negative shocks deteriorate and ameliorate environmental quality by increasing and decreasing pollution, respectively. The study also highlights the importance of promoting green products for sustainable development.

Does environmental regulatory system drive the green development of China's pollution-intensive industries?

Han Zou et al.

Summary: This study uses provincial panel data of pollution-intensive industries in China to explore the effects of environmental regulatory system on green total factor productivity (GTFP). The results show that technical change is the driving factor, while technical efficiency has an inhibiting effect on green development. Command-and-control environmental regulations currently play the primary driving role, but they are becoming increasingly strict and less effective. Both market incentive and voluntary environmental regulations have positive effects on GTFP, and their proper enhancement is crucial for future green development.

The S-shaped relationship between R&D investment and green innovation after cross-border merge and acquisition: evidence from China

Jingjing Li et al.

Summary: In the process of economic transition, emerging markets are realizing the importance of accessing advanced technologies for green innovation. Cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have become a fundamental requirement for acquiring mature market technologies. While previous studies suggest that research and development (R&D) can drive green innovation, this paper explores the more complicated relationship between R&D and green innovation in the context of cross-border M&A. Based on the knowledge-based view and stakeholder theory, the study analyzes 230 cross-border M&A cases in Chinese enterprises and finds that the impact of R&D input on green innovation performance after cross-border M&A follows an S-shaped curve. Additionally, the political connections and institutional distance of enterprises have a negative effect on the relationship between R&D input and green innovation performance after cross-border M&A.

The roles of energy efficiency improvement, renewable electricity production, and financial inclusion in stimulating environmental sustainability in the Next Eleven countries

Samiha Khan et al.

Summary: The economies and populations of the Next Eleven countries are expected to grow significantly in the coming decades, leading to increased energy demands. However, relying on traditional unclean energy resources can have adverse environmental consequences. Therefore, achieving environmental sustainability is crucial for these countries. This study explores the impact of improving energy efficiency, promoting renewable electricity production, and enhancing financial inclusivity on reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the Next Eleven countries. The findings suggest that energy efficiency improvement and a higher share of renewable electricity in total electricity production can mitigate carbon dioxide emissions in the long run, while financial inclusion, economic growth, and international trade are found to increase emissions. Additionally, the study reveals that energy efficiency and financial inclusion together have inhibiting effects on emissions, and this relationship is mediated and moderated by energy efficiency. These findings hold true when alternative estimation techniques and total greenhouse gas emissions are considered. The study recommends relevant policies related to environmental sustainability for the governments of the Next Eleven countries.

Does Environmental Regulation Help Mitigate Factor Misallocation?-Theoretical Simulations Based on a Dynamic General Equilibrium Model and the Perspective of TFP

Xu Dong et al.

Summary: This paper constructs a dynamic general equilibrium model and provides numerical simulation results to analyze the impact of environmental regulation on factor misallocation. The results show that environmental regulation has a significant effect on factor market misallocation, which depends on the firms' initial factor allocation and the intensity of the shock. Reducing regulation intensity for firms facing stronger distortion helps mitigate factor misallocation, while the same policy could exacerbate the misallocation for other firms. Additionally, the overhead labor input of firms moderates the effect of environmental regulation on factor allocation.

The impact of domestic and foreign R&D on TFP in developing countries

Dierk Herzer

Summary: There have been limited studies on the impact of domestic R&D on TFP in developing countries, and even fewer on the impact of both domestic and foreign R&D on TFP. This study examines the predictions of semi-endogenous theory and Schumpeterian theory regarding the R&D-TFP relationship in developing economies, compares the effects of domestic and international R&D spillovers on TFP, and investigates differences in these effects between middle-income and low-income countries. The findings suggest that domestic R&D has a greater positive effect on TFP than international R&D spillovers in developing countries.

Heterogeneous two-sided effects of different types of environmental regulations on carbon productivity in China

Wenfei Song et al.

Summary: In the context of globalization, enhancing carbon productivity is increasingly important. This study analyzes the effects of command-and-control and market-based environmental regulations on carbon productivity using data from 30 provinces in China from 2006 to 2018. The study finds that command-and-control environmental regulation has a negative impact on carbon productivity, while market-based environmental regulation has a positive impact. The negative effects of command-and-control regulations have decreased over time, while the positive effects of market-based regulations have increased. Resource-intensive and carbon-intensive regions are more sensitive to the negative effects of command-and-control regulations.

Summary: This study examines the impact of regulatory policy on total factor productivity (TFP) at both firm and industry levels, using a theoretical model and the difference-in-differences method. Empirical results suggest that while cleaner production standards may reduce resource allocation efficiency, they can increase firms' TFP, especially for small and state-owned firms. Policy evaluation should consider changes in TFP and resource allocation simultaneously.
