Investigation of mixed species biofilm on corrosion of X65 steel in seawater environment

Meiying Lv et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the interaction between multiple bacterial species can exacerbate the corrosion of X65 steel, with the presence of iron oxidizing bacteria increasing the growth activity of sulfate reducing bacteria cells and promoting their role in steel corrosion, leading to the development of annular pits on the steel surface induced by anaerobic SRB.

Mathematical modelling of microbial corrosion in carbon steel due to early-biofilm formation of sulfate-reducing bacteria via extracellular electron transfer

Javiera Anguita et al.

Summary: A mechanistic mathematical model of microbial corrosion induced by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) through extracellular electron transfer (EET) was developed and implemented in this study. The simulations of biofilm development and growth-associated corrosion were in agreement with experimental evidence, revealing the main parameters controlling MIC.

Electrochemical studies of microbiologically influenced corrosion of X80 steel by nitrate-reducing Bacillus licheniformis under anaerobic conditions

Jun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of a wild-type nitrate-reducing Bacillus licheniformis strain on the corrosion behavior of X80 steel under anaerobic conditions. The results showed that the bacterium accelerated the corrosion of X80 steel through biocatalytic cathodic nitrate reduction and acidification. However, after approximately one week of immersion in the bacterial culture, the corrosion rate of X80 steel decreased due to iron biomineralization.

Long-term souring treatment using nitrate and biocides in high-temperature oil reservoirs

Diogo Jurelevicius et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biogenic production of hydrogen sulfide by sulfate-reducing bacteria in high-temperature oil reservoirs over three years, and found that the addition of nitrate and THPS during secondary oil recovery effectively controlled SRB activity. Different dominant bacterial groups, including thermophilic SRB and nitrate-reducing bacteria in oil reservoir 1, and mesophilic SRB in oil reservoir 2, were identified. The choice of strategy during secondary oil recovery modulated the microbial community and altered the dynamics of H2S production.

Nitrite is a more efficient inhibitor of microbial sulfate reduction in oil reservoirs compared to nitrate and perchlorate: A laboratory and field-scale simulation study

Moein J. Veshareh et al.

Summary: Microbial sulfate reduction is the main source of hydrogen sulfide in offshore oil reservoirs, with nitrate, nitrite, and perchlorate being potential inhibitors. Nitrate inhibits sulfide accumulation by promoting sulfate reduction and sulfide oxidation, while nitrite is the most efficient inhibitor. Further field scale studies are needed to confirm the effectiveness of perchlorate as a souring mitigation agent.

Extracellular electron transfer in microbial biocorrosion

Tingyue Gu et al.

Summary: Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is also known as biocorrosion by microbial biofilms. Research has shifted towards applying bioenergetics to MIC science, focusing on extracellular electron transfer (EET) in supplying electrons for microbial respiration. Advancements have been made in deciphering inward EET involved in MIC, studying the impact of EET on MIC through carbon source starvation and electron mediator acceleration, and manipulating electron mediator-related genes to elucidate EET in MIC.

Characterization of microbiological influence corrosion for API 5L X46 pipeline by sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB)

Kadhim Finteel Al-Sultani et al.

Summary: The microbiological corrosion behavior of API 5L X46 low steel taken from a damaged petroleum transporting pipeline in Babylon, Iraq was investigated in this study. The presence of sulfide reducing bacteria Desulfovibrio sp was confirmed through analysis, and it was found that the A medium had a higher percentage of weight loss compared to the B medium.SEM and EDS examination showed the presence of sulfide bacteria in specimens grown in the A medium, while the B medium had a different surface nature due to the absence of bacteria. X-ray diffraction tests revealed different corrosion products in the two mediums, with the A medium containing compounds associated with sulfur (FeS) and the B medium showing compounds like FeNO3, possibly from the agricultural area's interaction with minerals or pest control measures.
