Chemical denudation in a small mountainous coastal river in the tropics: Insights from Kali River, Southwestern India

Kumar Arun et al.

Summary: A study conducted on the Kali River in India revealed that seasonal rainfall and runoff significantly influence silicate weathering in the basin. The annual chemical denudation rate was found to be higher than the global average, with the silicate weathering rate being three times higher. Intense rainfall, runoff, and temperature were identified as the main climatic factors accelerating weathering.

Major ion chemistry and silicate weathering rate of a small Western Ghats river, Sharavati, southwestern India

Vadakkeveedu Narayan Amrish et al.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the silicate weathering rates and CO2 sequestration rates in the tropical mountainous river Sharavati in southwest India. It found that intense chemical weathering due to hot and humid climate, heavy monsoonal rains, and associated river discharge were the main controlling factors of major ion chemistry in the Sharavati river. The calculated silicate weathering rate and associated CO2 consumption rate were found to be higher compared to other small tropical river basins with similar climate and lithology. It can be concluded that rainfall and runoff are the main parameters controlling weathering rates in small tropical rivers, regardless of catchment lithology.

Variability of trace metals in coastal and estuary: Distribution, profile, and drivers

Harmesa et al.

Summary: The ongoing global changes such as increasing sea-surface temperatures, decreasing acidity levels, and expanding oxygen-minimum zone may impact the biogeochemical cycles of trace metals in ocean systems. Each trace metal has unique characteristics and a distinctive distribution pattern controlled by chemical, biological, and physical processes. Variability drivers in trace metals are interesting topics for investigation.

Dynamics of trace metals with different size species in the Pearl River Estuary, Southern China

Ziming Fang et al.

Summary: The Pearl River Estuary in Southern China, the largest estuary in the region, regulates the fluxes of riverine trace metals into the South China Sea. The study found that trace metals undergo transformations between different phases during estuarine mixing, with an increase in dissolved metal concentration accompanied by a decrease in particulate metal concentration.

Prescribing sea water quality criteria for arsenic, cadmium and lead through species sensitivity distribution

Panneerselvam Karthikeyan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to derive seawater quality criteria for arsenic, cadmium, and lead based on Species Sensitivity Distribution (SSD). Eight species of sensitive marine organisms were assessed for their sensitivity to toxicity of these metals, and acute and chronic toxicity values were derived. The study prescribed Criterion Maximum Concentration, Criterion Continuous Concentration, and Predicted No Effect Concentration values as SWQC to protect marine organisms in different scenarios.

Integrative assessment of the ecological risk of heavy metals in a South American estuary under human pressures

Daniela M. Truchet et al.

Summary: Monitoring heavy metal pollution through biochemical biomarkers can be challenging due to physiological changes in organisms caused by natural factors and anthropogenic pressures. A study in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean assessed heavy metal concentrations in sediments and crab species, revealing low to moderate pollution levels. Biomarkers were not effective in assessing spatial pollution, potentially influenced more by physiological seasonal variations than anthropogenic constraints.

Metal pollution in the Pearl River Estuary and implications for estuary management: The influence of hydrological connectivity associated with estuarine mixing

Lixia Niu et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively analyzed the behaviors of seven metals in the Pearl River Estuary, revealing moderate pollution levels overall, with occasional severe perturbations. The eastern estuary was more heavily polluted by metals, and riverine inputs and estuarine mixing significantly influenced the distribution and movement of trace metals in the estuary.

Distribution and partitioning of heavy metals in water and sediments of typical estuary (Modaomen, South China): The effect of water density stratification associated with salinity

Zhenzhen Jia et al.

Summary: The study found significant salinity variations in the Modaomen estuary, with higher heavy metal concentrations in bottom water likely due to elevated salinity and water stratification causing restricted mixing. Sediment heavy metal distribution was influenced by various factors, with internal release potentially contributing significantly to higher levels in bottom water. Saltwater intrusion facilitated the mobility and repartitioning of metals in the estuarine ecosystem.

Investigation on trace metal speciation and distribution in the Scheldt estuary

Camille Gaulier et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biogeochemical behavior of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb along the Scheldt estuary, highlighting the variations of trace metal speciation and distribution. The mobility and partitioning of trace metals were mainly driven by biogeochemical reactions influenced by estuarine physicochemical parameters. The study confirmed decreasing trend for particulate metals and rising concentrations for dissolved trace metals along the Scheldt.
