Lifecycle cost analysis of an insulated duct with an air gap

Dileep Kumar et al.

Summary: This study introduces an air gap between insulation and duct surface to reduce the quantity of insulation and uses lifecycle cost (LCC) analysis to determine the economic benefits. Results show that ducts with an air gap have lower insulation thickness, resulting in maximum cost savings and shorter payback periods. Among different insulation materials, insulated duct with expanded polystyrene was found to be cost-effective with maximum cost savings and a short payback period, while the air gap was most effective for ducts insulated with rock wool. In conclusion, an air gap is a cost-effective design approach for duct applications.
