Hazards of toluene storage tanks in a petrochemical plant: modeling effects, consequence analysis, and comparison of two modeling programs

Saeed Shojaee Barjoee et al.

Summary: This study modeled the effects and consequences of toluene leaks using ALOHA and PHAST programs, analyzed and compared their outputs. The results showed that PHAST outputs were higher than ALOHA, and a survival zone with low death probability could be determined from a distance of 51 meters onwards.

Numerical study on effects of the cofferdam area in liquefied natural gas storage tank on the leakage and diffusion characteristics of natural gas

Zirong Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the leakage and diffusion characteristics of natural gas under the condition of LNG leakage in a storage tank. Different factors influencing the diffusion process were explored, and suggestions for rational cofferdam height and emergency response were provided. The findings emphasize the importance of barrier height design and effective measures for gas leakage in emergencies.

Consequence analysis due to possible ethanol leaks in sugarcane biorefineries

Matheus Schmatz et al.

Summary: This study simulated and evaluated the consequences of potential ethanol leaks in a hypothetical sugarcane biorefinery, using a Gaussian model to derive results and establishing an empirical mathematical model to describe system behavior. The analysis focused on statistical treatment for different leak scenarios, risk classification of catastrophic events, and the impact of leakage hole diameter on thermal radiation range. It emphasized the importance of simulations to prevent hazardous material leaks by considering specific plant characteristics.

Dynamic characteristics of chlorine dispersion process and quantitative risk assessment of pollution hazard

Baoquan Xin et al.

Summary: This study analyzed dispersion behavior characteristics and pollution hazard risk after a release of liquid chlorine by establishing a full-scale model and calculating dispersion characteristics of six leakage scenarios. The results showed that chlorine dispersion can be divided into three stages, and dispersion distance is related to concentration.

Hazardous chemical leakage accidents and emergency evacuation response from 2009 to 2018 in China: A review

Jie Hou et al.

Summary: Over the period from 2009 to 2018, China has seen a high number of hazardous chemical leakage accidents, particularly in coastal areas and industrial parks, resulting in a significant number of fatalities. Accidents in pipeline transportation are most likely to cause regional evacuations, with fuel gas and ammonia leaks being the main hazardous chemicals leading to evacuations.

Hydrostatic test of storage tanks using seawater and corrosion considerations

M. Hassanzadeh et al.

Summary: Hydrostatic testing is an essential method for quality control of storage tanks in the industry. The study investigated the corrosion behavior of welded carbon steel in seawater, finding that weld metal is more susceptible to corrosion than base metal. Despite the higher corrosion rate of weld metal, the hydrostatic test in seawater was found to be acceptable based on the results of corrosion tests.

Large eddy simulation of dispersion of hazardous materials released from a fire accident around a cubical building

Konstantinos Vasilopoulos et al.

Summary: The turbulent smoke dispersion around a cubical building from a pool fire was studied using large eddy simulation at a high Reynolds number, with a focus on two different fuel pool fire accident scenarios. It was found that in both scenarios, the downstream extent of the toxic zone is approximately the same, with smoke concentration and dispersion mainly influenced by convective buoyant forces and strong turbulence mixing processes within the wake zone of the building. The study suggests that wind is the dominating factor in these accident scenarios, which result in the highest toxicity levels.
