Evaluation of genotoxicity induced by herbicide pendimethalin in fresh water fishClarias batrachus(linn.) and possible role of oxidative stress in induced DNA damage

Priyanka Gupta et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the genotoxicity induced by the herbicide pendimethalin in fishClarias batrachus and investigated the role of oxidative stress in DNA damage. The results showed that pendimethalin caused DNA damage in fish, with the extent of damage influenced by concentration and exposure duration. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) significantly increased after 30 days of exposure, while lipid peroxidation levels followed a similar pattern. The findings suggest that DNA damage is caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during herbicide metabolism. Clarias batrachus can be used as a model organism for genotoxicity testing of pendimethalin, and comet assay and micronucleus test are effective tools for assessment.

Rethinking the term glyphosate effect through the evaluation of different glyphosate-based herbicide effects over aquatic microbial communities☆

Carmen Alejandra Sabio Garcia et al.

Summary: Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) encompass a variety of glyphosate salts and adjuvants, which have diverse impacts on aquatic microbial communities beyond the effects of the active ingredient alone. Different GBH showed significantly different effects on microbial community structures, affecting bacterioplankton abundance and specific picocyanobacteria populations. These findings highlight the need to consider the broader effects of GBH formulations on natural aquatic ecosystems beyond simply attributing impacts to glyphosate alone.

Assessing sub-lethal effects of the dinitroaniline herbicide pendimethalin in zebrafish embryos/larvae (Danio rerio)

Shuo Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the sub-lethal toxicity of pendimethalin to zebrafish embryos and larvae, and found that high doses of pendimethalin caused developmental abnormalities and reduced locomotor activity in embryos and larvae. Additionally, pendimethalin at concentrations below 5μM had no significant impact on oxidative respiration and reactive oxygen species production in embryos.

Summary: The study found that four commonly used chemical pesticides (beta-cypermethrin, chlorbenzuron, chlorothalonil, and pendimethalin) had effects on the growth of bee larvae, with beta-cypermethrin and chlorbenzuron having the most significant impact on the health of Apis mellifera ligustica and Apis cerana cerana. Additionally, a high dose of chlorothalonil also led to a decrease in adult bee numbers.

Does exposure to environmental 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid concentrations increase mortality rate in animals? A meta-analytic review

Ana Paula Da Silva et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis study evaluates the toxic effects of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) on various animal species. The results indicate a significant increase in mortality rate for animals exposed to environmental concentrations of 2,4-D, with fish and birds being more susceptible. Larval and adult animals are more sensitive to 2,4-D, and immersion exposure has the greatest impact. Furthermore, commercial formulations have a higher mortality rate compared to analytical standards.

Dinitroaniline herbicide pendimethalin affects development and induces biochemical and histological alterations in zebrafish early-life stages

Carmine Merola et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential effects of PND on the development of zebrafish early-life stages. The results showed that PND exposure caused mortality and sublethal alterations in the fish, including impaired fin development, delayed ossification of the vertebral column, disrupted muscle morphology, and increased neurotoxicity. In addition, biochemical changes in antioxidant enzymes were observed. These findings confirm the developmental toxicity of PND in zebrafish and suggest the role of oxidative stress in the sublethal alterations.

Summary: The dissipation kinetics of atrazine and trifluralin in clay loam soil were investigated under different temperature and moisture conditions. Temperature had a greater impact on atrazine persistence, while the interaction of temperature and moisture was significant for trifluralin over time. Both herbicides tended to double their half-life with every 10 degrees C decrease in temperature, indicating the potential for years of persistence in soil conditions <= 20 degrees C.
