Contribution of nonpoint source pollution from baseflow of a typical agriculture-intensive basin in northern China

Tiesheng Guan et al.

Summary: Baseflow is an essential part of total surface runoff and has a significant impact on water quality. This study focuses on the spatiotemporal characteristics of baseflow and pollution load in relation to nonpoint source pollution in a typical agriculture-intensive basin in northern China. The results show that baseflow contributes more than 70% to total runoff and non-point source pollution is mainly dominated by baseflow pollution. Baseflow and its pollution load are higher in nonflood seasons compared to the flood season. The spatial distribution of baseflow pollution intensity is higher in the east and lower in the west.

Evaluating diffuse and point source phosphorus inputs to streams in a cold climate region using a load apportionment model

K. J. Rattan et al.

Summary: This study examined the variation in phosphorus inputs in streams in the Red River Valley through analyzing phosphorus concentration-flow relationships. The results showed that for most sub-watersheds, diffuse sources contributed the most, but significant point-source inputs were also found in some sub-watersheds, especially during summer.

Baseflow estimation in typical catchments in the Yellow River Basin, China

Caihong Hu et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively assessed the applicability of methods for baseflow estimation in the Yellow River Basin, with the recursive digital filtering method showing the best performance. The estimated baseflow index of typical basins in the YRB ranged from 0.354 to 0.502, with a decreasing trend in inter-annual baseflow and uneven distribution in intra-annual baseflow.

Summary: Urban cover was found to have a significant impact on accuracy improvement in the models, while other catchment characteristics may also affect accuracy variation. The BM model consistently outperformed the GM model, modeling P values to ± 10% of actual values in 85.7% of datasets.

Dissolved phosphorus export through baseflow in an intensively cultivated agricultural watershed of eastern China

Shengjia He et al.

Summary: This study utilized a recursive tracing source algorithm (RTSA) to estimate baseflow dissolved phosphorus (DP) export in a typical rainy agricultural watershed of eastern China. Results showed that baseflow DP loads had a significant impact on nutrient enrichment of surface waters, especially in intensively cultivated agricultural watersheds. The findings suggest that under the context of global climate change, controlling baseflow DP export will be a crucial issue for nonpoint source pollution management in intensive agricultural watersheds.

Effects of dynamic factors of erosion on soil nitrogen and phosphorus loss under freeze-thaw conditions

Yuting Cheng et al.

Summary: The experiment results under freeze-thaw conditions show that freeze-thaw action has a significant impact on sediment loss, nitrogen, and phosphorus loss, making the loss behavior of nitrogen and phosphorus unstable and increasing diversity among individual samples. Freeze-thaw action significantly enhances the effect of dynamic factors on phosphorus and nitrogen loss.
