Advanced reduction of bromate by UV/TiO2-Bi process without external sacrificial agents: Mechanism and applications

Ying Xu et al.

Summary: The UV/TiO2-Bi advanced reduction process (ARP) was established for efficient removal of BrO3- without adding external sacrificial agents. The study demonstrated promising potential of the UV/TiO2-Bi ARP for BrO3- removal under specific conditions, but lower removal efficiency in tap water compared to deionized water.

Coupling photocatalytic and electrocatalytic oxidation towards simultaneous removal of humic acid and ammonia-nitrogen in landscape water

Tingting Du et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of photocatalytic and electrochemical oxidation on humic acid and ammonia, with Pt/TiO2 showing improved activity. A simple and effective method was developed to immobilize TiO2 and Pt/TiO2 onto ceramic foam for application. The study also examined the ammonia oxidation pathway through the performance of the RuO2-IrO2/Ti electrode.

Application of UV absorbance and electron-donating capacity as surrogates for micropollutant abatement during full-scale ozonation of secondary-treated wastewater

Nicolas Walpen et al.

Summary: In this study, the suitability of electron-donating capacity (EDC) as an additional control parameter for ozonation of wastewater was evaluated. The results showed that integrating residual EDC values as a second control parameter can improve existing absorbance-based ozonation control systems, particularly for low ozone dose applications.

Tuning electron transfer by crystal facet engineering of BiVO4 for boosting visible-light driven photocatalytic reduction of bromate

Guoshuai Liu et al.

Summary: The removal of bromate has gained attention in drinking water treatment, and photocatalysis technology using monoclinic bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) single crystal as a visible photocatalyst has shown promising results with almost 100% removal efficiency. The spatial transfer of photo-generated electrons and holes, as well as high photocatalytic activity, contribute to the effective removal of bromate ions.

Fate and reduction of bromate formed in advanced water treatment ozonation systems: A critical review

Begum Nazia Jahan et al.

Summary: Disinfection in water treatment systems helps eliminate health risks, but can also produce harmful disinfection by-products. Formation of potentially carcinogenic bromate during ozonation of bromide-containing waters has led to investigations into physical/chemical or biological reduction methods to mitigate the issue. Adsorption-based physical methods have been found to be more effective than chemical methods in potable water treatment.

The enhanced reduction of bromate by highly reactive and dispersive green nano-zerovalent iron (G-NZVI) synthesized with onion peel extract

Olga Lem et al.

Summary: This study synthesized novel green nano-zerovalent iron (G-NZVI) using onion peel extract, demonstrating its high reductive capacity and excellent oxidation resistance. The G-NZVI showed complete removal of BrO3 under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, outperforming other well-known reductants. These findings suggest that organic onion peel waste can be reused to synthesize highly reactive nanoparticles for water treatment.
