A scalable data collection, characterization, and accounting framework for urban material stocks

Hadi Arbabi et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a framework for automating the characterization of urban stock using a combination of mobile sensing and computer vision. The prototype implementation of this framework in a neighborhood in Sheffield, UK demonstrates its potential by automatically estimating component counts for buildings. This automated estimation enables stakeholders to better prepare for circular strategies, including building refurbishments, by understanding opportunities across the circular economic hierarchies.

Material intensity database for the Dutch building stock: Towards Big Data in material stock analysis

Benjamin Sprecher et al.

Summary: Re-use and recycling in the construction sector are crucial for controlling resource use, but acquiring data on the material content of buildings poses a significant challenge. Increasing the number of data points can provide a more comprehensive assessment of material stocks and the types of materials in demolition streams.

Semisupervised machine learning classification framework for material intensity parameters of residential buildings

Xaysackda Vilaysouk et al.

Summary: This study classified the material intensity (MI) of buildings using semisupervised machine learning, with input data from a global database. Results revealed seven building clusters, with three clusters following a Weibull distribution. Inferred building type labels can be used as additional attributes to the original dataset for new possibilities in other studies.

Urban development and sustainability challenges chronicled by a century of construction material flows and stocks in Tiexi, China

Jing Guo et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the construction material flow and stock trends in the Tiexi district of Shenyang, revealing significant changes in urban development since the early 20th century. The research found a sharp decrease in the median building lifetimes to as low as 6 years in the early 21st century, highlighting the challenges of urban development and environmental efficiency.

The use of steel in the United Kingdom's transport sector: A stock-flow-service nexus case study

Luis Gabriel Carmona et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the material flow in the UK transport sector using the stock-flow-service nexus, focusing on the contribution of steel consumption and accumulation in vehicles to passenger mobility. The efficiency of steel stock in cars and motorcycles decreased, while that of buses and national railways increased. The study also found that the annual fraction of flows maintaining the steel stock ranged from 3.4% to 8.2%.

High-Resolution Maps of Material Stocks in Buildings and Infrastructures in Austria and Germany

Helmut Haberl et al.

Summary: The study presents an alternative approach for mapping material stocks based on high-resolution EO imagery and OpenStreetMap data, with a focus on Austria and Germany. The method yields more complete results compared to other data sources and avoids the use of costly cadastral data, making it suitable for mapping larger areas and tracing trends over time.

Modelling of mineral construction and demolition waste dynamics through a combination of geospatial and image analysis

Lorenc Bogoviku et al.

Summary: This study proposes a methodology to assess mineral building stock and predicts the potential amount of waste that may be generated in the future. The research found that Luxembourg's construction stock is continuously growing, and the annual waste production is expected to be sufficient for a viable concrete recycling activity if regulations on waste volume flows are made available.

Extending urban stocks and flows analysis to urban greenhouse gas emission accounting: A case of Odense, Denmark

Maud Lanau et al.

Summary: In this study, urban stocks and flows analysis was extended to urban GHG accounting by introducing a complementary indicator of carbon replacement value (CRV). The research found that considering emissions embodied in urban stocks, Odense's CRV was equivalent to 13 years of its operational emissions, providing insights into the city's carbon profile and decarbonization opportunities. Urban metabolic based GHG accounting and inclusion of stocks can help estimate future GHG emissions from urbanization in developing countries and inform potential emission reduction strategies.

Stocks and flows of buildings: Analysis of existing, demolished, and constructed buildings in Tampere, Finland, 2000-2018

Satu Huuhka et al.

Summary: Research has identified cities as potential urban mines for recovering secondary construction materials. Studies typically focus on stocks or flows of bulk materials on high abstraction levels. This paper examines the characteristics and location of the stocks and flows of buildings in Tampere, Finland, over the last 20 years. The study shows that different functions of buildings have significant variations in replacement patterns, and redevelopment areas within the city structure are major arenas for building replacement. It is suggested that policymakers acknowledge the impact of urban planning on waste flows and incorporate conscious prevention and management into their agendas.

Spatial characterization of construction material stocks: The case of the Paris region

Vincent Augiseau et al.

Summary: This article examines the spatial distribution of construction materials in the Paris region in 2013, using a GIS modeling approach to estimate and locate different types of stocks. The study found a higher proportion of underground materials in anthropogenic stocks, with higher stock density in central Paris. Data suggests that systematic assessment of construction materials stocks in French regions and cities can be conducted using statistical data and GIS modeling.

Shuang Li et al.

Summary: Studying urban expansion in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration from a longer-term perspective, the research found that the urban area in this region had increased by 55.585 times in the past 100 years, mainly through continuous outward expansion. Important historical events and traffic development have also played a significant role in the expansion of cities in the area.
