Atmospheric Brown Carbon on the Tibetan Plateau: Regional Differences in Chemical Composition and Light Absorption Properties

Jianzhong Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the regional differences in brown carbon (BrC) properties in the southern and northern regions of the Tibetan Plateau through molecular-level analysis of fine particulate matter samples. The results highlight the chemical differences in BrC composition between the two regions, providing insights for predictive understanding of aerosol radiative forcing in the Tibetan Plateau area.

Amplification of light within aerosol particles accelerates in-particle photochemistry

Pablo Corral Arroyo et al.

Summary: Direct evidence of optical confinement-induced patterning inside aerosol particles is provided using x-ray spectromicroscopic imaging and modeling. The study found that photochemical reactions in most aerosol particles are accelerated by optical confinement effects, with rotation of free aerosol particles and intraparticle molecular transport further enhancing the photochemistry. Atmospheric models should consider the influence of optical confinement effects on aerosol particle photochemistry.

Photochemical Aging of Levitated Aqueous Brown Carbon Droplets

Stephanie H. Jones et al.

Summary: The study found that atmospheric processes such as evaporation and photochemical aging of brown carbon aerosol can cause a red shift in absorbance, leading to a greater overlap with the solar spectrum, which has important implications for the radiative forcing of climate.

Aging of Atmospheric Brown Carbon Aerosol

Rachel F. Hems et al.

Summary: Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) aerosol is emitted by numerous primary sources and formed by secondary sources, being chemically complex. As BrC aerosol ages through various chemical and physical processes in the atmosphere, its chemical composition and optical properties change significantly, impacting climate. Research in the past decade has expanded our understanding of BrC reactions in both gas and condensed phases, with a focus on gas phase reactions leading to BrC formation, aqueous and in-cloud processes, and aerosol particle reactions.

Photochemical Aging of Atmospheric Particulate Matter in the Aqueous Phase

Frank Leresche et al.

Summary: This study focused on the photoaging of PM2.5 in the aqueous phase, finding a seasonal variation in production rate (r(center dot OH)) and hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot), with lower values in winter and spring extracts and higher values in summer extracts. The photobleaching extent of the extracts was correlated with r(center dot OH), indicating non-(OH)-O-center dot processes took place. The half-life of compounds in the atmospheric aqueous phase was between 1.9 and 434 h based on measurements of hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen.

Mechanistic Insight into the Reactivities of Aqueous-Phase Singlet Oxygen with Organic Compounds

Benjamin Barrios et al.

Summary: Singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) is a reactive oxygen species that plays a key role in various environments. This study uses density functional theory calculations to determine reaction mechanisms with different organic compounds and discusses the dominant reaction mechanisms for each group. Theoretical calculations and experimental data are compared to establish linear free-energy relationships and correlations with electron density parameters.

Characterization of primary and aged wood burning and coal combustion organic aerosols in an environmental chamber and its implications for atmospheric aerosols

Amir Yazdani et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of aging on secondary organic aerosol concentrations and compositions from wood burning and coal combustion emissions. Results showed that there was an approximately 3-fold enhancement in organic aerosol concentration after aging, with distinct functional group compositions for aged emissions from different sources.
