Artificial sweeteners stimulate horizontal transfer of extracellular antibiotic resistance genes through natural transformation

Zhigang Yu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that artificial sweeteners promote the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes among bacteria, increase plasmid persistence in transformants, and enhance cell envelope permeability by upregulating DNA uptake and translocation machinery. These findings highlight the need to evaluate the antibiotic-like side effects of environmental contaminants such as artificial sweeteners.

Wastewater microorganisms impact the micropollutant biotransformation potential of natural stream biofilms

Werner L. Desiante et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of treated wastewater on the biotransformation potential of stream biofilms and found that the effect is due to the integration of microorganisms released with treated effluent into downstream biofilms. The findings provide important insights into the impact of wastewater treatment on ecosystem functions.

Artificial sweeteners and cancer risk: Results from the NutriNet-Sante population-based cohort study

Charlotte Debras et al.

Summary: This large cohort study found that higher consumption of artificial sweeteners, especially aspartame and acesulfame-K, was associated with increased cancer risk, particularly for breast cancer and obesity-related cancers. These findings provide valuable insights for the re-evaluation of food additive sweeteners by health agencies globally.

Nonnutritive sweeteners can promote the dissemination of antibiotic resistance through conjugative gene transfer

Zhigang Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that commonly used nonnutritive sweeteners may enhance plasmid-mediated conjugative transfer between bacteria, increasing the spread of antibiotic resistance genes. Bacteria exposed to these compounds produced more reactive oxygen species, triggered the SOS response, and experienced increased cell membrane permeability.

Conjugative plasmids interact with insertion sequences to shape the horizontal transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes

You Che et al.

Summary: The study found that plasmid-borne antimicrobial resistance genes are mainly enriched in conjugative plasmids. Scientists reported the discovery of a massive insertion sequence-associated antimicrobial resistance gene transfer network, suggesting a general evolutionary mechanism for horizontal gene transfer mediated by the interaction between conjugative plasmids and ISs. Experimental results confirmed the importance of these interactions in aiding the horizontal transfer and expanding the genetic range of antimicrobial resistance genes within complex microbial communities.

Trends in artificial sweetener consumption: A 7-year wastewater-based epidemiology study in Queensland, Australia

Dandan Li et al.

Summary: A 7-year study on artificial sweetener consumption in Australia showed that the consumption of acesulfame and saccharin increased annually, while cyclamate consumption decreased. This study highlights the feasibility of quantitatively measuring artificial sweetener consumption over time through wastewater analysis.

Microbial Roles in Dissolved Organic Matter Transformation in Full-Scale Wastewater Treatment Processes Revealed by Reactomics and Comparative Genomics

Liye Wang et al.

Summary: Microbe-mediated DOM transformation during wastewater treatment significantly increases DOM's aromaticity and unsaturation, diversifying DOM richness and generating nitrogenous and sulfur-containing compounds through oxidoreduction, functional group transfer, and bond formation. Network analysis shows microbial division of labor in DOM transformation with hub microbes correlated to liable DOM consumption and recalcitrant compound transformation, while peripheral degraders may feed on hub microbe metabolites. Developing technologies to selectively enrich peripheral degraders may advance DOM removal by decoupling liable and recalcitrant DOM transformation processes.

Acesulfame aerobic biodegradation by enriched consortia and Chelatococcus spp.: Kinetics, transformation products, and genomic characterization

Yue Huang et al.

Summary: Next-generation sequencing methods were used to explore the ACE-degrading communities enriched from activated sludge, revealing four metagenome-assembled genomes that may be responsible for ACE biodegradation. Additionally, two ACE-degrading pure strains affiliated to Chelatococcus genus showed high degradation capability and could mineralize around 90% of total organic carbon. This study provides valuable insights into ACE biodegradation and its biotransformation products.
