Iodide sources in the aquatic environment and its fate during oxidative water treatment - A critical review

Henry MacKeown et al.

Summary: Iodine is a naturally-occurring halogen in natural waters, but during oxidative drinking water treatment, iodine-containing disinfection by-products (I-DBPs) can be formed. I-DBPs are generally more toxic compared to their chlorinated and brominated analogues, making them a potential health problem. This paper provides a critical review on the reactivity of iodine and the most common intermediate reactive iodine species, as well as proposes methods to mitigate the formation of I-DBPs.

Sulfite-activated ferrate for water reuse applications

Charles D. Spellman et al.

Summary: Sulfite-activated ferrate is a promising emerging water treatment technology that can effectively oxidize contaminants and disinfect pathogens. Sub-stoichiometric activation shows good performance, while excessive activation leads to decreased treatment efficiency and increased byproduct formation.

Source and drinking water organic and total iodine and correlation with water quality parameters

Rassil Sayess et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence, magnitude, and seasonality of iodinated disinfection by-products (I-DBPs) in water treatment processes, and found substantial inter-monthly variability in TOI concentration without a clear seasonal signal. The results showed significant relationships between TOI concentration and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), specific UV absorbance (SUVA), combined chlorine residual (TCl2), and pH in water samples. The regression model could explain approximately 46% of the variance of TOI concentrations in the treated waters.

Overlooked enhancement of chloride ion on the transformation of reactive species in peroxymonosulfate/Fe(II)/NH2OH system

Zhuo-Yu Li et al.

Summary: This study compared the degradation efficiency of two hydroxylamine salts on dimethyl phthalate and found that Cl- significantly improved the production of hydroxyl radicals, affecting the oxidation intermediates. It was revealed for the first time that Cl- could shift reactive species from Fe(IV) to radicals in the PMS/Fe(II) system.

Chlorination decreases acute toxicity of iodophenols through the formation of iodate and chlorinated aliphatic disinfection byproducts

Xian-Shi Wang et al.

Summary: HOCl was found to effectively convert iodinated phenolic disinfection byproducts into non-toxic iodate and less toxic chlorinated aliphatic DBPs, reducing the acute toxicity of water samples containing iodophenols. Further investigations on the transformation and toxicity alteration of emerging DBPs during chlorination/booster chlorination are warranted due to the widespread use of chlorine as a disinfectant.

Bromine and iodine species in drinking water supply system along the Changjiang River in China: Occurrence and transformation

Xiaoqiu Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the speciation and transformation of bromine and iodine along the Changjiang River in drinking water supply system, revealing an apparent increase of organic bromine and iodine concentrations after treatment, possibly influenced by chlorine-containing disinfectant. Furthermore, concentrations of bromine and iodine in the river were found to increase with the direction of flow, and were correlated with the concentrations of artificial sweeteners and domestic sewage.
