Yanzhe Zhu et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel mgLAMP system for rapid quantification of SARS-CoV-2 particles in environmental waters. The system can detect virus concentrations as low as 0.96 copies/mL in less than 1 hour. Additionally, the integration of a 3D-printed portable device and smartphone-based imaging with machine learning-based image processing shows promise for large-scale environmental surveillance of SARS-CoV2.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) RNA in Wastewater Settled Solids Reflects RSV Clinical Positivity Rates

Bridgette Hughes et al.

Summary: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) can be used to infer infection trends by measuring the concentration of infectious substances in wastewater. This study found that respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) could be detected in wastewater, and its concentration was closely associated with clinical positivity rates. Since RSV infections have similar clinical presentations to COVID-19 and can be life-threatening, WBE could serve as an important tool to enhance RSV surveillance and public health response efforts.

Occurrence and Distribution of Disinfection Byproducts in Domestic Wastewater Effluent, Tap Water, and Surface Water during the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic in China

Zhigang Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence and distribution of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in domestic wastewater effluent, tap water, and surface water in China. Results showed that DBP concentrations were higher in wastewater effluents than tap water and surface water, with haloacetic acids (HAAs) and trihalomethanes (THMs) being the most dominant categories. Additionally, the study revealed that HAAs in wastewater effluents had higher risk quotient values for green algae.

Daniel Urrutia-Cabrera et al.

Summary: This study compares the performance of three LAMP-based assays targeting different regions of SARS-CoV-2, showing that all three assays can accurately detect 1000 RNA copies in 30 minutes, with the Gene N assay exhibiting no false positives. This highlights the significance of LAMP as a rapid, highly sensitive detection method for SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics.

Wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 across 40 US states from February to June 2020

Fuqing Wu et al.

Summary: Wastewater-based disease surveillance is a promising approach for monitoring community outbreaks. A nationwide campaign in the US found that SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in wastewater samples, with viral concentrations declining from April to May. The detection rate of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater was positively associated with the size of wastewater treatment plant catchment areas.

Point-of-Care Diagnostic Tools for Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 Infections

Dhanasekaran Sakthivel et al.

Summary: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a highly contagious virus causing COVID-19, with over 212 million confirmed cases and nearly 4.4 million deaths globally as of August 24, 2021. Early diagnosis and isolation are crucial in controlling the spread of SARS-CoV-2, with standard RT-PCR protocols being time-consuming and expensive. New methods like isothermal nucleic acid amplification tests offer a cost-effective solution for expanding COVID-19 testing.

SARS-CoV-2 Wastewater Surveillance for Public Health Action

Jill S. McClary-Gutierrez et al.

Summary: Wastewater surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 has shown potential in complementing existing disease surveillance systems by correlating viral RNA concentrations in untreated sewage with reported case trends. Bridging the communication and knowledge gaps between researchers and public health responders is crucial for translating these measurements into useful public health tools. Addressing these barriers may pave the way for making this emerging public health tool a sustainable nationwide surveillance system.
