Risk assessment of microplastics in freshwater sediments guided by strict quality criteria and data alignment methods

Paula E. Redondo-Hasselerharm et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the risks of microplastics in freshwater sediments worldwide. Stricter quality criteria and alignment methods were used to assess the risks to benthic communities. The results suggest that the risks of microplastics in sediments cannot be excluded at current concentrations globally.

Risk assessment of microplastic particles

Albert A. Koelmans et al.

Summary: This Review examines the properties of microplastic particles and discusses methods of assessing the risks they pose to humans and the environment. Microplastic particles are widespread in the environment and can be found in the air we breathe and the food we eat. The lack of a risk assessment framework that considers the multidimensionality of microplastic particles compared to natural particles is a key challenge. This article reviews current understanding of microplastic characteristics and effects and proposes a method for quantifying exposure and effect thresholds using probability density functions.

Manta Net: The Golden Method for Sampling Surface Water Microplastics in Aquatic Environments

Gabriel Pasquier et al.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) have become the most common type of litter contaminating aquatic environments worldwide, with the potential to harm aquatic organisms and enter the food web. However, the lack of standardized sampling methods and data reporting units makes it difficult to compare studies. This review analyzes the methodologies and characteristics of the commonly used Manta nets for sampling MPs in surface waters and proposes recommendations for improving and standardizing sampling protocols.

Lifetime Accumulation of Microplastic in Children and Adults

Nur Hazimah Mohamed Nor et al.

Summary: The study presents a probabilistic lifetime exposure model for microplastics that considers intake through various pathways, simulating concentrations in different parts of the body and validating against empirical data. Results indicate a small contribution of microplastics to overall chemical intake. Future research should focus on exploring the contributions of other food types to microplastic exposure.

Characterizing the multidimensionality of microplastics across environmental compartments

Merel Kooi et al.

Summary: Understanding the multidimensionality of microplastics is essential for realistic assessment of risks they pose. The study captures characteristics of over 60,000 individual microplastic particles as continuous distributions, revealing differences in distribution patterns among particles from different aquatic compartments. This suggests potential sources, removal or fragmentation processes, as well as toxicologically relevant dose metrics.

Breaking down chipping and fragmentation in sediment transport: the control of material strength

Sophie Bodek et al.

Summary: The study shows that rocks undergo fragmentation and chipping mechanisms during transportation, but the transition from chipping to fragmentation is not well studied. Experimental results indicate that decreasing strength leads to a transition from chipping to fragmentation, where attrition products become larger, attrition rate decreases with material strength, and shape evolution fluctuates and becomes non-monotonic. The findings validate conceptual and numerical models for impact attrition and suggest the need to incorporate distinct attrition mechanisms in bedrock erosion models.
