Origins of Electron-Transfer Regime in Persulfate-Based Nonradical Oxidation Processes

Wei Ren et al.

Summary: This review discusses the use of persulfate-based nonradical oxidation processes (PS-NOPs) in wastewater purification, focusing on recent advances in nonradical electron-transfer regimes, including design of catalysts, in situ/operando characterization/analytics, and understanding the origins of electron-transfer mechanisms. The study found that persulfate is activated by a catalyst to form surface activated complexes, which interact directly or indirectly with target pollutants for oxidation.

Aqueous Iron(IV)-Oxo Complex: An Emerging Powerful Reactive Oxidant Formed by Iron(II)-Based Advanced Oxidation Processes for Oxidative Water Treatment

Zhen Wang et al.

Summary: High-valent iron(IV)-oxo complexes play a significant role as reactive intermediates in various chemical and biological systems. Among them, the aqueous iron(IV)-oxo complex ((FeaqO2+)-O-IV) is the simplest but also the most powerful ferryl ion species, showing high reactivity and selectivity in oxidizing water treatment. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of the chemical properties, oxidation mechanisms, and kinetics of (FeaqO2+)-O-IV, with comparisons to other free radicals. Additionally, the potential role of (FeaqO2+)-O-IV in Fe-aq(2+)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is discussed, challenging the conventional view that free radicals dominate these AOPs.

Hydroxyl radicals in anodic oxidation systems: generation, identification and quantification

Jiangzhou Xie et al.

Summary: Anodic oxidation is a promising treatment technology for removing organic pollutants from wastewaters. Hydroxyl radicals are the primary species used for oxidizing organics. This review discusses the methods of identifying hydroxyl radicals, debates on the validity of experimental results, and quantification methods. It also highlights the generation mechanisms of hydroxyl radicals and their utilization in electrochemical reactors. The key challenges for anodic oxidation technology are identified as eliminating errors in identification, establishing effective quantification methods, developing cost-effective anode materials, and optimizing reactor designs for maximum utilization efficiency of hydroxyl radicals.

Toward Selective Oxidation of Contaminants in Aqueous Systems

Zhichao Yang et al.

Summary: The presence of diverse pollutants in water poses a threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems globally. Chemical oxidation has been an effective technology for pollutant destruction, but faces challenges in treating emerging micro-pollutants. There are various examples of selective oxidation strategies in water treatment, but a systematic understanding of selectivity origins and rational catalyst design is still lacking.

Reduction-oxidation series coupling degradation of chlorophenols in Pd-Catalytic Electro-Fenton system

Wenjing Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, Pd/CeO2 was used as a bifunctional catalyst in the EF system to effectively remove chlorophenols, achieving over 95% removal within 10 minutes. The degradation rate constant was significantly increased in the Pd/CeO2-EF system compared to electrolysis with Pd/CeO2 and EF alone. The generation of -OH and dehydrochlorination by Pd [H] were identified as key contributors to the removal of chlorophenols.

Enhanced organics degradation by three-dimensional (3D) electrochemical activation of persulfate using sulfur-doped carbon particle electrode: The role of thiophene sulfur functional group and specific capacitance

Fei Qi et al.

Summary: In this study, sulfur-doped carbon particle electrode was utilized to enhance the oxidation performance of persulfate in a three-dimensional electro-assisted activation process. Significant synergy between electric and catalytic activations of persulfate was observed, with thiophene sulfur functional group identified as the main active site and specific capacitance acting as an assistant factor. The electro-assisted activation of persulfate was found to proceed through both radical and non-radical pathways, with a possible mechanism proposed for the electrochemical process.
