Isomer-Specific Two-Color Double-Resonance IR2MS3 Ion Spectroscopy Using a Single Laser: Application in the Identification of Novel Psychoactive Substances

Fred A. M. G. van Geenen et al.

Summary: The ion trap mass spectrometer allows for two-color double resonance IR-IR experiments on mass-to-charge selected ions using a single infrared laser. This simplifies the experimental complexity and enhances the application in analytical MS field. In a forensic context, the methodology was demonstrated by identifying previously unidentified isomeric novel psychoactive substances from a confiscated sample by the Amsterdam Police.

MolDiscovery: learning mass spectrometry fragmentation of small molecules

Liu Cao et al.

Summary: molDiscovery is a mass spectral database search method that improves efficiency and accuracy of small molecule identification by learning a probabilistic model to match small molecules with their mass spectra. It identifies six times more unique small molecules than previous methods based on a search of over 8 million spectra from the Global Natural Product Social molecular networking infrastructure. The method uses an algorithm to generate mass spectrometry fragmentations to match small molecules with their mass spectra.

Evaluation of table-top lasers for routine infrared ion spectroscopy in the analytical laboratory

Rianne E. van Outersterp et al.

Summary: Infrared ion spectroscopy is recognized as a method to identify analytes detected by mass spectrometry in various chemical areas, with integration into analytical laboratories being considered. To overcome collisional deactivation at high pressures, high instantaneous power infrared lasers are needed, with most studies currently being performed at infrared free electron laser facilities. The proliferation of this technique in routine analytical laboratories requires table-top infrared lasers, such as optical parametric oscillators (OPOs), which offer high intensities and good spectral tuning ranges.

A vibrational spectroscopic and computational study of the structures of protonated imidacloprid and its fragmentation products in the gas phase

Kelsey J. Menard et al.

Summary: By combining IRMPD spectroscopy experiments and computational chemistry studies, the structures of protonated imidacloprid and its decomposition products were elucidated. The comparison of experimental and computed IR spectra revealed the complexity of the protonated imidacloprid decomposition process, highlighting the importance of considering multiple structural contributions in interpreting IRMPD spectra.
