Spatiotemporal characterization of irradiance and photolysis rate constants of indoor gas-phase species in the UTest house during HOMEChem

Shan Zhou et al.

Summary: Intensive measurements of wavelength-resolved spectral irradiance in a test house during the HOMEChem campaign revealed clear diurnal cycles and large variations in local gas-phase photochemical activity. Sunlight entering through windows was found to be the dominant source of UV light, leading to increased photolysis rate constants and spatially heterogeneous reactions. Opening windows increased UV photon fluxes and predicted local hydroxyl radical concentrations in sunlit regions were significantly higher.

Factors affecting wavelength-resolved ultraviolet irradiance indoors and their impacts on indoor photochemistry

Shan Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found variations in UV attenuation by windows in different indoor environments, but similar wavelength-resolved transmittance in residential and non-residential buildings. Indoor UV irradiance is influenced by factors such as solar angles, light sources, and distance from windows, with higher OH concentrations predicted under direct sunlight.

Quantification and source characterization of volatile organic compounds from exercising and application of chlorine-based cleaning products in a university athletic center

Zachary Finewax et al.

Summary: Humans spend majority of their time indoors, where their activities and occupancy impact the air quality. The study found that human VOC emissions during exercise are higher than when individuals are at rest, and are correlated with increased CO2 emissions. Emission factors from personal care products remain consistent with previous studies, and typically decrease throughout the day. Additionally, the study observed the presence of N-chloraldimines in the gas phase after cleaning exercise equipment with a dichlor solution, likely originating from reactions on gym surfaces.

Quantifying Proximity, Confinement, and Interventions in Disease Outbreaks: A Decision Support Framework for Air-Transported Pathogens

Tami C. Bond et al.

Summary: The inability to effectively communicate how infectious diseases spread in human environments has led to avoidance of interactions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors introduce a metric, Effective ReBreathed Volume (ERBV), to quantify transmission and analyze the impact of different particle sizes and interventions on spreading. This framework helps in identifying transmission modes and effective interventions, supporting mitigation decisions in emerging situations.

Quantification of cooking organic aerosol in the indoor environment using aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometers

Erin F. Katz et al.

Summary: The study focuses on discrepancies in AMS quantification of cooking organic aerosol (COA) during indoor field studies, suggesting adjustments to relative ionization efficiency (RIE) to align with co-located instruments. RIECOA values observed (ATHLETIC: 4.26-4.96, HOMEChem: 4.70-6.50) in indoor environments were consistent with laboratory measurements of cooking-specific molecules. The findings recommend applying RIECOA=4.2 in source and indoor COA studies, and evaluating a higher POA response factor in outdoor studies depending on the site impact.

Validation of a new cavity ring-down spectrometer for measuring tropospheric gaseous hydrogen chloride

Teles C. Furlani et al.

Summary: This study configured a commercial HCl cavity ring-down spectrometer for fast, sensitive, and accurate measurements of hydrogen chloride in the ambient atmosphere, showing high performance in detecting atmospherically relevant mixing ratios with short response time and high accuracy. Intercomparison with the EPA compendium method demonstrated good agreement and superior performance of the CRDS technology in sensitivity, selectivity, and response time compared to previous methods for HCl detection.

Iodide CIMS and m/z 62: the detection of HNO3 as NO3- in the presence of PAN, peroxyacetic acid and ozone

Raphael Dorich et al.

Summary: Chemical ionisation mass spectrometry using I- ions has been used to measure NO3 and N2O5, but reports of high daytime concentrations likely suffer bias from HNO3 presence. Laboratory experiments demonstrate efficient detection of HNO3 with I- ions, especially in the presence of O-3, but a potential bias in I-CIMS measurements due to the conversion of CH3CO2 to NO3- is identified. Further ozone and humidity dependence on HNO3 detection is characterized for accurate measurements in stratospheric air masses.

An in situ gas chromatograph with automatic detector switching between PTR- and EI-TOF-MS: isomer-resolved measurements of indoor air

Megan S. Claflin et al.

Summary: The study presents a field-deployable gas chromatograph with thermal desorption preconcentration for in situ measurements of volatile organic compounds. The system demonstrated fast time-response data acquisition, molecular speciation, and high-resolution mass spectral information for each resolved GC peak. Results show successful identification and quantification of a range of VOCs in indoor environments, suggesting the production of DMSD from humidity-dependent heterogeneous reactions on surfaces.
