Concentrations of Tire Additive Chemicals and Tire Road Wear Particles in an Australian Urban Tributary

Cassandra Rauert et al.

Summary: Tire road wear particles are a significant source of microplastics in urban environments, and they also facilitate the release of additive chemicals into the environment. Stormwater plays a major role in transporting both tire wear particles and additives to urban surface water. During severe storm events, the concentration of additives increased more than 40 times, and there was a strong correlation between the concentrations of tire wear particles and all additives.

Occurrence of tire and road wear particles in urban and peri-urban snowbanks, and their potential environmental implications

Elisabeth S. Rodland et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that tire and road wear particles are major sources of microplastic contamination. There is a wide variation in the mass concentrations and snow mass loads of these particles in snow. Contrary to previous findings, the speed limit is found to be a key variable impacting the mass concentrations. The presence of large amounts of suspended solids in roadside snow highlights the need for treatment before release into the environment.

Millions of microplastics released from a biodegradable polymer during biodegradation/enzymatic hydrolysis

Xin-Feng Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that enzymatic hydrolysis of a biodegradable polyester in an aqueous environment resulted in the formation of a large number of microplastic particles. Non-enzymatic hydrolysis was also observed but did not produce particles within the experimental timeframe. The formation of microplastics was attributed to the uneven hydrolysis/erosion rate across the polymer film surface, resulting in the release of fragmented micro-sized protruding structures. Additionally, acidic monomers and oligomers were released during the enzymatic hydrolysis process, causing a decrease in pH. These findings highlight the significant risk of microplastic pollution from biodegradable plastics.
