Enzymatic cometabolic biotransformation of organic micropollutants in wastewater treatment plants: A review

David M. Kennes-Veiga et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the metabolic activities, mechanisms, and enzymatic activities involved in the biotransformation of organic micropollutants in wastewater treatment plants under different redox environments. Common methodologies for studying such enzymes, including in vitro enzyme assays, enzymatic inhibitors, analysis of transformation products, and various -omic techniques, are discussed. Perspectives on major challenges and future research requirements to enhance the biotransformation of organic micropollutants are proposed.

Occurrence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in WWTP effluent-receiving water bodies and reclaimed wastewater treatment plants

Rumeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of antibiotics and ARGs in four WWTP effluents, downstream effluent-receiving water bodies and RWTPs. It was found that WWTP effluents were not the major contributors to the levels and species of antibiotics and ARGs in the surface water bodies. RWTPs showed good removal efficiency of antibiotics and ARGs.

The organic loading rate affects organic micropollutants' cometabolic biotransformation kinetics under heterotrophic conditions in activated sludge

David M. Kennes-Veiga et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that organic micropollutants are biotransformed cometabolically in activated sludge systems. Experiments revealed that the biodegradation of the primary carbon source and the biotransformation of the OMPs occur simultaneously, demonstrating cometabolic behavior. The biotransformation kinetic constant of the OMPs showed a linear dependence with the organic loading rate of the primary substrate, indicating the significant influence of heterotrophic activity on the biotransformation kinetics of OMPs.
