Fundamentals and applications of photoelectrocatalysis as an efficient process to remove pollutants from water: A review

Paulina Alulema-Pullupaxi et al.

Summary: Water pollution is a growing environmental problem due to population growth, industrialization, and agricultural expansion. Conventional wastewater treatment methods are ineffective in removing organic and toxic pollutants, but electrochemical advanced oxidation processes, particularly photoelectrocatalysis (PEC), offer a promising solution. PEC technology involves applying bias potential to a semiconductor film on a conductive substrate to enhance degradation of pollutants in water.

Facile synthesis of iron(II) doped carbonaceous aerogel as a three-dimensional cathode and its excellent performance in electro-Fenton degradation of ceftazidime from water solution

Abolfazl Ahmadi et al.

Summary: In this study, the EF process was used to remove ceftazidime (CAZ) from an aqueous solution by synthesizing a carbonaceous aerogel as a cathode electrode and evaluating key factors influencing CAZ removal efficiency. The optimal values for applied current intensity, pH, initial CAZ concentration, and process time were determined, and the intermediates of CAZ removal were identified. The reusability and stability of the cathode were also assessed, showing a slight decline in CAZ removal efficiency after multiple cycles, with a high level of organic carbon degraded by the process.
