Effects of mercury, organic carbon, and microbial inhibition on methylmercury cycling at the profundal sediment-water interface of a sulfate-rich hypereutrophic reservoir

Byran C. Fuhrmann et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal patterns of MeHg cycling in a sulfate-rich, hypereutrophic reservoir using microcosm incubations. Results showed that aeration and SRB inhibitor decreased MeHg concentration, while methanogenic inhibitor increased MeHg concentration. The addition of organic carbon and microbial inhibitors also had significant impacts on MeHg concentration.

Distribution and bioavailability of mercury in the surface sediments of the Baltic Sea

Urszula Kwasigroch et al.

Summary: The study investigated the levels of mercury and its forms in surface sediments of the Baltic Sea, finding that Hg concentrations were highest in industrialized areas and regions affected by historical activities. Labile Hg fractions, mainly organic compounds, were found to be dominant and potentially release into the water column, impacting the trophic chain. Despite reduced Hg emissions, surface sediments remain a significant secondary Hg source in the Baltic Sea ecosystem.

Effect of consortium bioaugmentation and biostimulation on remediation efficiency and bacterial diversity of diesel-contaminated aged soil

Dhiraj Kumar Chaudhary et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that consortium bioaugmentation (CB) and biostimulation are effective in remediating diesel-contaminated aged soil, degrading petroleum hydrocarbons and improving metabolic activity. However, these methods can reduce bacterial diversity, leading to selective enrichment of bacterial communities.

Soil Biogeochemical Cycle Couplings Inferred from a Function-Taxon Network

Bin Ma et al.

Summary: This study identified key microbial taxa regulating soil biogeochemical processes using metagenomic data from forest soils in eastern China, highlighting the sensitivity of soil pH as an indicator for functional gene composition and diversity. A bipartite network inferred from metagenomic contigs revealed microbial taxa regulating coupled biogeochemical cycles between carbon and phosphorus, nitrogen and sulfur, and nitrogen and iron, providing novel evidence for the coupling of soil biogeochemical cycles and demonstrating the efficacy of a new approach to investigate soil ecosystem functions.
