The link between COVID-19 mortality and PM2.5 emissions in rural and medium-size municipalities considering population density, dust events, and wind speed

Federico Paez-Osuna et al.

Summary: This study revealed that municipalities with high PM2.5 emissions and high population density have a higher COVID-19 mortality rate; exceptionally high COVID-19 mortality rates in rural municipalities may be associated with dust events; the influence of wind speed on COVID-19 mortality rate was evidenced only in municipalities with <100 inhabitants per km(2).

Particulate matter exposure at a densely populated urban traffic intersection and crosswalk

Hong-di He et al.

Summary: This study investigates pedestrian exposure to PM pollution at an urban traffic intersection through fixed-site and mobile measurements, analyzing variations in particle sizes and exposure during different segments of a pedestrian's journey. The results highlight the importance of reducing PM pollution at intersections and provide valuable information for policymakers to consider measures to decrease pedestrian PM exposure.

Atmospheric deposition of biologically relevant trace metals in the eastern Adriatic coastal area

Abra Penezic et al.

Summary: By collecting aerosol, bulk deposition, sea surface microlayer, and underlying water samples, the study assessed the impact of atmospheric deposition on the oligotrophic coastal region, indicating that extreme events may account for most of the atmospheric deposition. The findings also highlighted the significant influence of open-fire biomass burning and Saharan dust intrusion on the distribution of trace metals in seawater.

Spatiotemporal variability of COVID-19 pandemic in relation to air pollution, climate and socioeconomic factors in Pakistan

Khalid Mehmood et al.

Summary: The study found significant relationships between COVID-19 cases and PM2.5 and climatic factors in three provincial capital cities and the federal capital city, with differences in correlations among cities. There was a moderate relationship between COVID-19 and population density.

Investigating connections between COVID-19 pandemic, air pollution and community interventions for Pakistan employing geoinformation technologies

Khalid Mehmood et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of major interventions and lockdowns on the COVID-19 outbreak in three out of four provinces of Pakistan from March to June 2020. The findings showed that major NPI and lockdown measures had a significant effect on reducing virus transmission. Continued community interventions are needed to control the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in cities with high COVID-19 incidence until a vaccine is available.
