Application of self-organizing map (SOM) and K-means clustering algorithms for portraying geochemical anomaly patterns in Moalleman district, NE Iran

Amirreza Bigdeli et al.

Summary: In this study, the regional geochemical patterns of regularly sampled stream sediment data in the Moalleman district, northeast Iran were revealed using K-means and self-organizing map (SOM) as clustering methods. The data was processed using isometric log-ratio (ilr) transformation and principal component analysis (PCA), and then clustered using K-means and SOM. A supervised SOM model was also used to locate high anomalous zones. The results showed that the SOM models were superior to K-means in delineating geochemical anomaly targets.

Pollution, ecological risk, and source identification of potentially toxic elements in sediments of a landscape urban lagoon, China

Ronggen Jiang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the sources and pollution levels of PTEs in Yundang lagoon, China, finding widespread contamination with high ecological risks and toxicity mainly attributed to Hg and Cd. Organic carbon was found to play a critical role in PTEs, and the limited environmental carrying capacity of the lagoon may lead to progressive pollution accumulation.

Identification of heavy metal pollution in estuarine sediments under long-term reclamation: Ecological toxicity, sources and implications for estuary management

Lixia Niu et al.

Summary: After long-term reclamation, the Modaomen estuary of the Pearl River Delta suffered from moderate-to-high pollution status due to enriched accumulation of heavy metals like Cr, Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd, and Ni, with Cd being a major concern for ecosystem health. Receptor models quantified the sources and contributions of these heavy metals, highlighting the importance of controlling metal input and managing sediment quality in the estuary.

Assessment of toxicity and potential health risk from persistent pesticides and heavy metals along the Delhi stretch of river Yamuna

Musarrat Parween et al.

Summary: The study aimed at evaluating the environmental quality of the most polluted stretch of river Yamuna in Delhi, focusing on the presence of harmful substances in sediment and vegetable samples, and assessing the ecological and dietary health risks posed to the local population. The results indicated significant contamination of sediments with heavy metals, with some metals reaching levels of high concern, and high translocation factors in vegetables, suggesting bioaccumulation and potential health risks to consumers.

Bioaccumulation and biomagnification of potential toxic elements (PTEs): An Avicennia germinans-Uca rapax trophic transfer story from Jobos Bay, Puerto Rico

Michael Martinez-Colon et al.

Summary: The mangrove forest in southern Puerto Rico is exposed to various sources of pollution, leading to accumulation of potentially toxic elements in flora and fauna. Fiddler crabs act as both de-concentrators for most pollutants and macro-concentrators for copper and arsenic. Arsenic is the only element found to be biomagnified through the sediment-mangrove leaf-fiddler crab food chain.

Hyeryeong Jeong et al.

Summary: The study showed that heavy metals in coastal sediments and seagrass mainly come from natural sources, with As and Hg posing the highest ecological risk. The concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Hg were higher in leaves of E. acoroides than in roots, and Zn, Cd, and Hg had high bioconcentration factors.

Concentration distribution and assessment of heavy metals in surface sediments in the Zhoushan Islands coastal sea, East China Sea

Bin Zhai et al.

Summary: This study collected 51 surface sediment samples in the Zhoushan Islands coastal sea of the East China Sea to assess heavy metal contamination and environmental risks. The analysis revealed that Zn, Cr, Cd, and Hg may come from a common source, while Cu and Pb, as well as As, show different distribution patterns. The results suggest that Cu and Cd may pose environmental risks.

Ariadne Marra de Souza et al.

Summary: This study proposes new standards to assess sediment contamination in saline and brackish environments in Brazil, based on geochemical analyses of samples collected in the Green Coast region. Sepetiba Bay is identified as the most environmentally degraded area due to anthropogenic contamination. The results suggest that current metal concentration levels allowed by Brazilian legislation are not adequate for coastal environments.

Heavy metal (PTE) ecotoxicology, data review: Traditional vs. a compositional approach

S. T. Mullineaux et al.

Summary: This study investigated the movement of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) in soils through different transformations and found that the centred log ratio transformation (clr) consistently outperformed the more traditional log10 transformation. Complex heatmaps showed that clr could isolate relationships between PTEs and identify commonalities between datasets, while log10 could not. The compositional approach provided more realistic interpretations about PTEs in soil and animal soft tissue compared to other transformations.

Summary: The study utilized various techniques to analyze the mollusc assemblages in the So River Basin in Benin, identifying four distinct assemblages along an upstream-downstream gradient. Different physicochemical variables influence the distribution of mollusc species, with upstream sites characterized by bivalves and gastropods, middle reach sites with organic pollution but no specific indicator species, downstream sites with high mineral and heavy metal concentrations, and brackish water sites with organic and heavy metal pollution.
