Characteristics of the urban heat island effect, in the coastal city of Patras, Greece

Athanassios Giannopoulos et al.

Summary: The ambient air urban heat island effect in the coastal city of Patras was studied. The results indicate that urban heat island effects are not very intense in this city. The analysis also shows lower air temperatures across transversal streets.

Insights about the Sources of PM2.5 in an Urban Area from Measurements of a Low-Cost Sensor Network

Georgios Kosmopoulos et al.

Summary: A two-year study on PM2.5 measurements was conducted in the Patras area of Greece, revealing an average concentration of 9.4 μg/m³ and higher levels in the city center. The study also identified the significant contribution of local emissions to PM2.5 levels during colder periods.

Simulation of the cooking organic aerosol concentration variability in an urban area

Evangelia Siouti et al.

Summary: Cooking activities are a source of urban air pollution that is often overlooked. By simulating and analyzing cooking organic aerosol (COA) emissions in the Greek city of Patras, it was found that dinner and lunch times are peak periods for COA emissions, while the local production of secondary COA is slow.

Forecasting Particulate Pollution in an Urban Area: From Copernicus to Sub-Km Scale

Areti Pappa et al.

Summary: Particulate air pollution worsens cardiovascular and lung diseases. Accurate local air quality forecasting is crucial for pollution control strategies. CAMS provides 4-day-ahead regional forecasts and open-access air quality predictions. The study evaluates CAMS PM forecasts against in-situ measurements in a Mediterranean city and compares AnEn and LSTM models in forecasting air pollution levels. AnEn outperforms LSTM and reduces CAMS RMSE by 50% for PM2.5 and 60% for PM10. Both models are reliable for air pollution forecasting and can be used in other regions with modifications.
