Nanoplastics-induced oxidative stress, antioxidant defense, and physiological response in exposed Wistar albino rats

Ali Akbar Babaei et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics can lead to oxidative stress and physiological changes in male rats, including an increase in reactive oxygen species, alterations in antioxidant responses, and changes in biochemical parameters. The results suggest possible neurobehavioral effects, dysfunctions in energy metabolism, and kidney dysfunction associated with exposure conditions. Further research with a larger sample size is needed to validate these findings.

Brain single-nucleus transcriptomics highlights that polystyrene nanoplastics potentially induce Parkinson's disease-like neurodegeneration by causing energy metabolism disorders in mice

Boxuan Liang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that nanoplastics can cause Parkinson's disease-like neurodegeneration in mice by disrupting energy metabolism and mitochondrial function in various brain cells. These effects are accompanied by inflammatory responses and dysfunction of proteostasis and synaptic-function regulation. The substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and striatum are particularly vulnerable to nanoplastic-induced neurodegeneration due to energy metabolism disorder. The neurological health risks of nanoplastic exposure should be taken seriously.

Micro/nano-plastics cause neurobehavioral toxicity in discus fish (Symphysodon aequifasciatus): Insight from brain-gut-microbiota axis

Jun-Nan Huang et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have investigated the neurobehavioral toxicity of microplastics, and this study reveals a novel mechanism by which microplastics may cause behavioral toxicities via the brain-gut-microbiota axis. Results showed that exposure to different types and concentrations of microplastics had varying effects on the growth, swimming, and predatory performance of juvenile discus fish, as well as on neurotransmitter concentrations in the brain and gut. Additionally, the study found changes in gut microbiota richness and composition, as well as alterations in gene expression related to neural activities and enrichment of specific neuroactive pathways in both types of microplastics.

Toxic effects of nanoplastics with different sizes and surface charges on epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in A549 cells and the potential toxicological mechanism

Gulinare Halimu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) can increase the risk of lung fibrosis by inducing epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in alveolar epithelial cells. This process may be mediated by the up-regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4), as well as mitochondrial dysfunction, among other mechanisms. Furthermore, smaller PS-NPs with a positive surface charge show stronger effects and the involvement of NOX4 is essential in this process.

Polystyrene microplastics disrupt the blood-testis barrier integrity through ROS-Mediated imbalance of mTORC1 and mTORC2

Yuexin Wei et al.

Summary: Exposure to polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) has been found to decrease sperm quality and quantity in male Balb/c mice. This is likely due to the disruption of blood-testis barrier (BTB) integrity, induced by PS-MPs causing cytoskeleton disorganization and imbalanced mTORC1 and mTORC2 activities via increased ROS levels.

Chronic exposure to UV-aged microplastics induces neurotoxicity by affecting dopamine, glutamate, and serotonin neurotransmission in Caenorhabditis elegans

Haibo Chen et al.

Summary: Chronic exposure to aged polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) may cause more severe neurotoxicity compared to virgin PS-MPs, affecting dopamine, glutamate, and serotonin neurotransmission. These findings highlight the potential risks of aged microplastics on the neural systems of organisms.

Effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on Ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp) after individual and combined exposure with zinc oxide nanoparticles

Fernanda Neves Estrela et al.

Summary: The study found that short-term exposure to PS NPs affected fish's response to mirror tests, as well as induced inactivity towards alarm substances and DNA damage. Increased oxidative stress was observed, and while antioxidant levels were elevated, they were not sufficient to counteract the effects of free radicals produced by the treatment.

Metal oxide nanoparticles and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons alter nanoplastic's stability and toxicity to zebrafish

Nisha Singh et al.

Summary: The co-occurrence of nanoplastics with metal oxide nanoparticles and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has been widely studied, yet little is known about their interactions and combined toxic effects. This research found that increasing the concentration of metal oxide nanoparticles led to aggregation of nanoplastics, while polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons had no major impact on nanoplastic stability. The size of the nanoplastics played a role in genotoxicity, with smaller nanoplastics showing higher levels of DNA damage.
