Interaction between humic substances and arsenic species simulating environmental conditions

Aryanna S. P. N. Costa et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the influence of natural organic matter on the mobility of arsenic species in an ecosystem, focusing on the interaction between humic substances (HS) and different arsenic species under varying pH and HS concentration. The research identified the complexing capacity of HS by As(III) and proposed a model for the interaction between soil HS and arsenic species based on the experimental results.

Humic acid modulates growth, photosynthesis, hormone and osmolytes system of maize under drought conditions

Qi Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of humic acid (HA) on drought resistance and growth of maize plants. The results showed that introducing an appropriate amount of HA can improve soil macro-aggregates, soil water content, and the availability of nutrients. HA application also regulated gene expression related to photosynthesis, carbon fixation, hormone, and osmotic metabolism in maize leaves. Under drought stress, HA application significantly increased maize yields and water use efficiency. These findings provide valuable insights into the drought resistance mechanism of maize and offer support for crop production in water-limited conditions.

Rice grain arsenic and nutritional content during post harvesting to cooking: A review on arsenic bioavailability and bioaccessibility in humans

Deepanjan Mridha et al.

Summary: Rice consumption is a global health issue due to arsenic exposure, particularly in Asian regions where rice contains high levels of inorganic arsenic. Using contaminated groundwater for post-harvesting, pre-cooking, and cooking contribute to arsenic contamination in rice. Polishing brown rice and cooking with clean water can reduce arsenic concentration. However, in rural areas, cooking with arsenic-contaminated groundwater poses a significant health risk. Assessing bioaccessibility and bioavailability of arsenic is important in understanding human exposure. Newly developed cooking methods and using treated surface water or rainwater for consumption are alternative solutions. Further research is needed to address the gaps in this area.

Arsenic and Its Effect on Nutritional Properties of Oyster Mushrooms with Reference to Health Risk Assessment

Ayan De et al.

Summary: Arsenic contamination is a long-term issue in West Bengal, India, and arsenic exposure can have harmful effects on health. Mushrooms grown in arsenic-enriched rice straw have higher arsenic concentrations, especially in Pleurotus species. The bio-concentration factor of arsenic is highest in the stem during the 3rd flush, and the health risk index based on dietary intake of these arsenic-enriched mushrooms is moderately high, indicating a potential health risk with higher intake.

Arsenic toxicity in livestock growing in arsenic endemic and control sites of West Bengal: risk for human and environment

Antara Das et al.

Summary: The study indicates that geochemical arsenic toxicity in domestic livestock poses potential risks to human and the environment. Arsenic intake in cows and goats is significantly higher than control groups, with arsenic bioconcentration mainly observed in cow dung and tail hair. The presence of arsenic in animal proteins from exposed livestock could lead to health risks for humans.

Arsenic behavior in soil-plant system and its detoxification mechanisms in plants: A review

Imran Khan et al.

Summary: Arsenic is a highly toxic and cancer-causing metal that enters the food chain through contaminated water or food, leading to harm to living organisms. The reduction of arsenic content in food is crucial for a healthy life. Understanding the mechanisms of arsenic uptake and transportation in plants, as well as the role of soil factors and plant cell transporters, is essential for developing strategies to restrict arsenic entry into plant cells and ensure safe food production with high crop yields.

Humic acids induce a eustress state via photosynthesis and nitrogen metabolism leading to a root growth improvement in rice plants

Tadeu Augusto van Tol de Castro et al.

Summary: Chemical eustressors, such as humic acids (HA), have the potential to induce a positive stress state in plants, improving growth and resistance. Different structural characteristics of HA can lead to varying effects on photosynthesis regulation in rice plants. Understanding the interactions between HA and plants is crucial for optimizing growth and stress response.

Rice seed (IR64) priming with potassium humate for improvement of seed germination, seedling growth and antioxidant defense system under arsenic stress

Deepanjan Mridha et al.

Summary: The intolerable levels of arsenic in groundwater in the Ganga-Meghna-Brahmaputra plain has negative impacts on rice production. Priming seeds with K-humate can improve seed germination and plant growth under arsenic stress, increasing vigour index and reducing oxidative stress markers.
