Fish health in the Nidda as an indicator for ecosystem integrity: a case study for Central European small streams in densely populated areas

Mona Schweizer et al.

Summary: The study reveals that anthropogenic pollution has a negative impact on the ecological state of the Nidda River, leading to liver lesions and abnormal function of the CYP1A1 system in fish. There is minimal variation between seasons and sampling sites, but it was observed that liver condition is poorest during the spawning season and downstream of industrial dischargers, tissue integrity and EROD activity are most affected. Different fish species show varying sensitivity to pollution, with brown trout being the most impacted and European chub being less affected.

Univariate or multivariate approaches for histopathological biomarkers in the context of environmental quality assessments?

Paloma Kachel Gusso-Choueri et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of integrating individual histopathological responses with contaminant results through multivariate analysis in assessing environmental quality. The results showed that the multivariate analysis approach provided a more accurate classification of environmental quality compared to the univariate index.

Seasonal effect of land use management on gill histopathology of Barbel and Douro Nase in a Portuguese watershed

R. M. B. Santos et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the Vilarica River was heavily polluted in both summer and winter, with different causes for each season. The increase in physico-chemical parameters was attributed to reduced streamflow in summer and soil erosion in winter. Gill injuries in barbel and Douro nase were found to be correlated with water quality, influenced by seasonal agricultural practices and flow regime.

Heavy metal contamination status in Greek surface waters: A review with application and evaluation of pollution indices

Ioannis Karaouzas et al.

Summary: The overall heavy metal contamination status of surface water bodies in Greece generally meets environmental quality standards, but sediment heavy metal concentrations often exceed guidelines. A few rivers and lakes are moderately to highly contaminated by heavy metals.

Age-specific accumulation of toxic metal(loid)s in northern pike (Esox lucius) juveniles

Dusan Nikolic et al.

Summary: The study found that young northern pike individuals were more sensitive to pollution, but older fish showed higher overall bioaccumulation of toxic elements. Since there was no significant correlation between metal accumulation and fish condition, the relationship between age and accumulation of toxic elements was also insignificant.

Summary: The study validated the effects of lead on wild shorthorn sculpin by controlled laboratory exposure, showing that lead exposure had different impacts on various organs in fish, and blood was found to be suitable for assessing lead accumulation in sculpins.

A review of mercury pathological effects on organs specific of fishes

Siti Zuraida Zulkipli et al.

Summary: Rapid development is associated with mercury pollution in aquatic environments, leading to tissue histopathological abnormalities and toxicity in fish. Understanding how fish respond to mercury contamination and its effects on their overall health is crucial.
