Characteristics of Se in water-soil-plant system and threshold of soil Se in seleniferous areas in Enshi, China

Chenhao Lyu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of Se enrichment in the water-soil-plant system, as well as the dietary Se status of local residents in seleniferous areas. The results showed that Se in well water mainly came from Se-enriched shales and coals, and the mobility of Se in seleniferous soils was relatively low. The concentration of Se in edible parts of crops varied widely, with cereal plants having a higher Se-enrichment ability than tuber plants. The probable dietary Se intake in high-Se areas has decreased in recent years but still exceeds the permissible value. Reducing cereal-derived dietary Se intake is an important strategy to improve the Se nutrition status in high-Se areas.

Benefits and limitations of straw mulching and incorporation on maize yield, water use efficiency, and nitrogen use efficiency

Xiaoliang Qin et al.

Summary: The study found that straw mulching and straw incorporation can significantly increase maize yield, WUE, and NUE. Straw mulching showed a positive correlation with WUE, while straw incorporation had stronger positive correlations with WUE and NUE. Additionally, the effects of the two methods varied under different nitrogen application rates and straw returning amounts.

Cadmium speciation and release kinetics in a paddy soil as affected by soil amendments and flooding-draining cycle

Jiali Yan et al.

Summary: The bioavailability of cadmium in paddy soils is strongly influenced by the flooding-draining cycle and amendments such as CaCO3 and CaSO4. The speciation and release kinetics of cadmium are affected by the duration of flooding and different amendments in paddy soils. Adding CaCO3 can reduce cadmium accumulation in rice plants.

Summary: The study found that soil flooding promotes the binding of Cd to S and results in the enrichment of heavy Cd isotopes in plants in soil-rice systems rich in Cd and S. Excluder rice roots strongly retain light Cd isotopes, while the difference in isotope composition between roots and shoots is smaller in non-excluder rice plants.

The Voltaic Effect as a Novel Mechanism Controlling the Remobilization of Cadmium in Paddy Soils during Drainage

Hui Huang et al.

Summary: Excessive cadmium accumulation in rice grain is a global issue affecting human health, with the voltaic effect identified as a novel mechanism controlling Cd remobilization during soil drainage. Metal sulfides with lower electrochemical potential are more prone to oxidative dissolution, while those with higher potential are protected from oxidation. The voltaic effect plays an important role in the oxidative dissolution of sulfides in trace metals coupled with the sulfur redox cycle in periodically anoxic-oxic environments.

Underlying mechanisms responsible for restriction of uptake and translocation of heavy metals (metalloids) by selenium via root application in plants

RenWei Feng et al.

Summary: Selenium has been shown to be an essential element for humans and can reduce the uptake of heavy metals in plants by influencing antioxidant systems, photosynthesis, repair of damaged cell structures, and balancing essential elements in plant tissues. This review focuses on how selenium regulates the migration and transformation of heavy metals in the soil-plant system, presenting a hypothesis on why and how selenium reduces heavy metal uptake in plants. The review examines the influence of soil characteristics, plant root systems, selenium-HM interactions, arsenic competition, and gene expression regulation on heavy metal uptake, translocation, and sequestration in plants.

Characteristics of selenium enrichment and assessment of selenium bioavailability using the diffusive gradients in thin-films technique in seleniferous soils in Enshi, Central China

Chenhao Lyu et al.

Summary: The bioavailability of selenium in seleniferous soils is influenced by its distribution, with only small proportions found in soluble and exchangeable forms. Selenium primarily exists in organic matter-bound fractions, showing a significant positive correlation with soil organic matter. The use of DGT technology accurately assesses selenium bioavailability in naturally seleniferous soils.

Accumulation of straw-derived carbon and changes in soil humic acid structural characteristics during corn straw decomposition

XiaoWei Zhang et al.

Summary: Appropriate application of corn straw residues can increase soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration, with changes in soil humus C and humic acid (HA) molecular structure observed during the decomposition process. The early stages of decomposition enrich soil HA with more aliphatic C compounds, while aromatic structures are formed in the later stages, suggesting that incorporation of corn straw into the soil can potentially increase SOC and aliphaticity in HA, contributing to increased C sequestration.

Inhibition effect of sulfur on Cd activity in soil-rice system and its mechanism

Meng Zhao et al.

Summary: Sulfur can regulate the mobility of cadmium in soil by increasing the levels of dissolved organic oxygen, Fe(II), and S(-II), while decreasing the concentration of labile Cd. This leads to the promotion of Cd reduction and the formation of CdS and iron complexed Cd, ultimately inhibiting the mobility of Cd.

Fe(III) reduction due to low pe plus pH contributes to reducing Cd transfer within a soil-rice system

Shanshan Li et al.

Summary: The study found that low soil pe+pH levels can increase the relative abundance of Fe-reducing bacteria, which in turn promote the reduction of Fe(III) and increase Fe2+ content in flooded soils, leading to decreased Cd uptake by rice. Flooding treatment can reduce the CaCl2-extractable Cd content in soil and decrease Cd uptake by rice during tillering and booting stages, which are critical for Cd transport in the soil-rice system.
