PBDEs in the marine environment: Sources, pathways and the role of microplastics

Summary: This article evaluates and quantifies the sources and pathways of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the ocean, with a particular focus on the migration from plastics and contaminated plastics themselves. The calculations based on measurements suggest that a substantial amount of PBDEs is deposited in the ocean annually, mainly through aerosols and air-water gas exchange. The input of PBDEs from plastic products and marine plastic litter is estimated to be significant, but it is expected to decrease in the next two decades due to the reduced production and recycling of these chemicals. The study also highlights the potential enhanced migration of PBDEs when weathered microplastics are exposed to fish and seabirds' oily digestive fluids.
