Atmospheric deposition of Pb and Cd in the Cedrus atlantica for environmental biomonitoring

Kaan Isinkaralar

Summary: Atmospheric heavy metal deposition is a significant threat to human health and the environment. This study used tree rings as a biomonitor to investigate the effect of anthropogenic emissions in urban areas. Samples of Cedrus atlantica were collected from parks near roads, densely populated areas, and small-scale industries in Kastamonu, Turkiye, and the deposition of lead and cadmium in the organs was analyzed. Traffic density and industrial emissions were found to greatly affect the concentrations of these heavy metals.

Atmospheric Cd, Cr, and Zn Deposition in Several Landscape Plants in Mersin, Turkiye

Kaan Isinkaralar et al.

Summary: The principal problem in dense cities is air pollution and the damage to the environment caused by it. Roadside landscape plants are exposed to high concentrations of air pollutants, such as chromium, cadmium, and zinc. This study aimed to determine the concentration changes of these pollutants in different organs and washing status using 14 common landscape species. The results showed that Chamaecyparis lawsoniana (A. Murr.) Parl. had better biomonitoring features for heavy metal accumulation among all species.

Summary: Traffic emissions and industrial activities cause atmospheric contamination. Trees can be used as biomonitor to assess air pollution. This study analyzed tree rings to determine the trends of trace metal deposition in Ankara and found significant correlation between toxic metal accumulation and emissions sources.

Kaan Isinkaralar

Summary: Air pollution in industrial areas has become an increasingly significant problem since the 1990s. Tree bark and annual rings have been used as convenient biomonitors for assessing the speciation and transition of pollutants in trees. In this study, Robinia pseudoacacia was found to be the better choice for evaluating atmospheric metal pollution in the Izmit region over the past 30 years.

Using Cedrus atlantica's annual rings as a biomonitor in observing the changes of Ni and Co concentrations in the atmosphere

Ismail Koc

Summary: The study on Ni and Co concentrations in the annual rings of Cedrus atlantica found that the highest concentrations of heavy metals were in the outer bark, with limited transmission of metals within the wood. It was also observed that Ni concentration significantly changed directionally in the woods and was related to the traffic volume, indicating that the annual rings of Cedrus atlantica were suitable biomonitors for monitoring Ni concentration changes.

The potential of using Cedrus atlantica as a biomonitor in the concentrations of Cr and Mn

Duygu Seda Savas et al.

Summary: Air pollution, especially from heavy metals emitted by industrial and traffic activities, is a significant issue impacting environmental pollution and human health. By using tree rings as biomonitors, changes in heavy metal concentrations in the air, particularly those associated with traffic density, can be effectively monitored to control pollution levels.
