Geospatial investigation on transitional (quiescence to surge initiation) phase dynamics of Monacobreen tidewater glacier, Svalbard

Debangshu Banerjee et al.

Summary: The transition of a glacier from quiescence to surge phase can significantly affect its dynamics and characteristics. The study conducted on the Monacobreen Glacier in Svalbard from 2016 to 2019 revealed that the glacier had been inactive since 2001 before experiencing a surge from 2017 to 2018. Geospatial techniques were employed to identify different radar zones within the glacier and track changes in equilibrium line altitude and surface velocity. The analysis demonstrated that the glacier's dynamic behavior and characteristics were altered during the surge phase. Geospatial techniques can provide reasonable estimates of a glacier's physical and dynamical parameters in the absence of field observations.

Ice viscosity is more sensitive to stress than commonly assumed

Joanna D. Millstein et al.

Summary: Accurately representing the viscous flow of ice is crucial for understanding glacier dynamics and predicting sea-level rise. Glen's Flow Law, a constitutive relation often used to describe ice viscosity, is typically represented by a constant value of n=3, but observations and experiments support a range of values across different stresses and temperatures. This study utilizes remote sensing data of Antarctic ice shelves to show that the viscous flow of ice in fast-flowing areas can be approximated by Glen's Flow Law with n=4.1±0.4, indicating that the viscosity and flow rate of ice are more sensitive to changes in stress than commonly assumed in ice-flow models.

Ice thickness distribution of all Swiss glaciers based on extended ground-penetrating radar data and glaciological modeling

Melchior Grab et al.

Summary: Accurate knowledge of ice thickness distribution and glacier bed topography is crucial for predicting dynamic glacier changes. Using the AIR-ETH helicopter-borne GPR platform, researchers measured the ice thickness of glaciers in the Swiss Alps from 2016 to 2020, resulting in a total glacier volume estimate of 58.7 +/- 2.5 km(3) in 2016 and 52.9 +/- 2.7 km(3) in 2020.

TanDEM-X PolarDEM 90 m of Antarctica: generation and error characterization

Birgit Wessel et al.

Summary: The study presents the generation and validation process of the TanDEM-X PolarDEM 90m of Antarctica, which includes improvements such as gap filling, void interpolation, and smoothing of noisy areas compared to the global TanDEM-X DEM version. A new concept for absolute height adjustment was also implemented. The final PolarDEM 90m is characterized by its high accuracy, homogeneity, and coverage completeness, making it a valuable dataset for polar research.

Estimation of glacier stored water in the Bhaga basin using laminar flow and volume-area scaling methods

J. S. Gopika et al.

Summary: This study estimated the glacier stored water of 319 glaciers in the Bhaga basin in the Himalayas using a technique based on glacier surface velocity, slope, and laminar flow law, with the surface velocity and thickness of 64 glaciers estimated using the COSI-Corr and HIGTHIM tools. A new Volume-Area scaling relationship was developed, and the total glacier stored water of the Bhaga glaciers was estimated as 15 +/- 2.8 Gt, providing better estimates for further hydrological investigations in the basin.

Anomalous glacier thinning due to climate feedback mechanism in the Himalaya and evidences in other mountain ranges

Gulab Singh et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the climate feedback mechanism can accelerate glacier melting, especially when meltwater from retreating tributary glaciers flows into the main glacier body. There is a relationship between the density of meltwater influx points and glacier thinning, which is not considered in current mass balance models. Future mass loss prediction models should take into account the influence of the climate feedback system.
