CREST-VEC: a framework towards more accurate and realistic flood simulation across scales

Zhi Li et al.

Summary: This study presents a hydrologic modeling framework, CREST-VEC, which combines a gridded water balance model and a newly developed vector-based routing scheme. The framework demonstrates significant improvements in computational efficiency and performance compared to conventional fully-gridded models, and incorporates a lake module for further enhanced accuracy. The proposed framework provides a solid basis for continental- and global-scale water modeling and allows for optimized streamflow predictions with quantified uncertainty information.

The conterminous United States are projected to become more prone to flash floods in a high-end emissions scenario

Zhi Li et al.

Summary: This study uses high-resolution climate simulations to reveal the changes in future flash floods. The results show that flashiness of floods in the US will increase, particularly in the Southwest and central regions. It calls for climate-resilient measures for emerging flash flood hot spots.

Combined Modeling of US Fluvial, Pluvial, and Coastal Flood Hazard Under Current and Future Climates

Paul D. Bates et al.

Summary: This study presents a new and significantly improved analysis of flood hazard in the United States, incorporating updated hydrography data, rigorous flood frequency analysis, downscaled output to property tract level, and the impact of local interventions. For the first time, pluvial, fluvial, and coastal flood hazards are considered within the same framework, providing projections for both current and future conditions centered on 2035 and 2050. Validation against high-quality models shows clear improvements, particularly in high-frequency events and coastal zones. The study demonstrates changing flood hazard patterns, even under a stabilization emissions scenario, with significant implications for land use and flood defense protection in the future.

Simulation of Hurricane Harvey flood event through coupled hydrologic-hydraulic models: Challenges and next steps

Tigstu T. Dullo et al.

Summary: This study highlighted the importance of hydrologic parameters in improving flood modeling and the minimal impact of initial water depths on large flood events. Manning's roughness coefficients may affect the flood extent and high-danger zones, while bathymetry correction factors and reservoir storage capacity can also have corresponding impacts on flooding.

CREST-iMAP v1.0: A fully coupled hydrologic-hydraulic modeling framework dedicated to flood inundation mapping and prediction

Zhi Li et al.

Summary: A new hydrologic model, CREST-iMAP, introduced in the study, accurately simulates floods and predicts inundated areas. The study found that antecedent soil moisture and land surface characteristics are key factors affecting model accuracy, with the infiltration process being significant for flood prediction models.

Hindcast of pluvial, fluvial, and coastal flood damage in Houston, Texas during Hurricane Harvey (2017) using SFINCS

A. Sebastian et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the accurate prediction of flood depth and extent during Hurricane Harvey in Houston using the SFINCS model, showing much larger total losses compared to FEMA's preliminary assessment. The incorporation of spatially-distributed pluvial hazards into flood risk analysis is crucial for identifying high-risk areas and improving loss estimation methods.
