How low can they go? Aerobic respiration by microorganisms under apparent anoxia

Jasmine S. Berg et al.

Summary: Oxygen is the ultimate oxidant on Earth, and microorganisms have evolved the ability to respire oxygen at extremely low levels, even in seemingly anoxic habitats. Recent advances in O-2 sensing and DNA/RNA sequencing technologies have revealed that microbial respiration of O-2 at nanomolar concentrations is ubiquitous and drives microbial activity. This discovery is changing our understanding of biogeochemical cycling in oxygen-limited environments.

The bacterial sulfur cycle in expanding dysoxic and euxinic marine waters

Daan M. van Vliet et al.

Summary: Low-oxygen marine waters have significant impacts on global ecosystems, biogeochemistry, and society. Sulfur-cycling bacteria play key roles in these environments, but their functions remain unclear and require further investigation in future research.

The cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus has divergent light-harvesting antennae and may have evolved in a low-oxygen ocean

Osvaldo Ulloa et al.

Summary: Prochlorococcus, the most abundant photosynthetic organisms in the modern ocean, influence elemental cycling and energy flow. Research suggests that Prochlorococcus may have diverged from other cyanobacteria under low-oxygen conditions and transitioned from phycobilisomes to transmembrane chlorophyll complexes. These findings are crucial for understanding the ecology and evolution of this genus.

Sulfur cycling in oceanic oxygen minimum zones

Cameron M. Callbeck et al.

Summary: The sulfur cycle plays a crucial role in oxygen minimum zones, particularly in highly productive coastal areas, where sulfide-rich sediments interact with the water column. Active blooms of sulfide-oxidizing bacteria help detoxify sulfide and contribute to nitrogen loss and greenhouse gas emissions. The widespread distribution and multifaceted nature of the sulfur cycle in oceanic oxygen minimum zones highlight its importance for biogeochemical processes.

A committed fourfold increase in ocean oxygen loss

Andreas Oschlies

Summary: The model simulations suggest that ocean deoxygenation will continue to worsen in the future, even if CO2 emissions are stopped. This will result in increased pressure on deep-ocean ecosystems, with a potential decline in metabolic viability of deep-sea animals by up to 25%.
