Assessing Unconventional Oil and Gas Exposure in the Appalachian Basin: Comparison of Exposure Surrogates and Residential Drinking Water Measurements

Cassandra J. Clark et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between unconventional oil and gas development and adverse health outcomes. The researchers compared different metrics to assess exposure through household groundwater. They found that the detection rates of certain organic chemicals decreased with increasing distance to the nearest well, while the detection rate of toluene increased. The correlations between metrics and inorganic chemicals were limited.

Groundwaters in Northeastern Pennsylvania near intense hydraulic fracturing activities exhibit few organic chemical impacts

Boya Xiong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution status of horizontal drilling with hydraulic fracturing (HDHF) in the Northeastern Pennsylvania region and found a low probability of systematic groundwater organic contamination. In the survey of 94 domestic groundwater sites, all analyzed volatile and semi-volatile compounds were below the recommended limits by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The integrated concentrations of organic compounds were also low. Correlation analyses showed that, except for a few specific cases, statistically significant correlations were not found.

Assessing Exposure to Unconventional Oil and Gas Development: Strengths, Challenges, and Implications for Epidemiologic Research

Nicole C. Deziel et al.

Summary: This review discusses the methods and challenges of exposure assessment in epidemiologic studies on unconventional oil and gas development (UOGD), and suggests ways to improve the accuracy and feasibility of exposure assessment. Simplified and less-specific assessment methods have advantages in scalability and interpretability, while more detailed and specific models and metrics can reduce exposure misclassification and provide more information. Collecting multi-media environmental and biological exposure measurements is feasible in specific cohort subsets and can provide insights into UOG-related exposures.

Numerical Investigation of Wellbore Methane Leakage From a Dual-Porosity Reservoir and Subsequent Transport in Groundwater

Amy K. Rice et al.

Summary: The study uses three-dimensional, multiphase simulations to analyze methane migration from a hydrocarbon wellbore, evaluating the impact of fast advective transport and slow diffusive transport on water quality. The results show that the changes caused by dual-domain mass transfer significantly affect the rate of methane reaching groundwater.

Assessment of groundwater well vulnerability to contamination through physics-informed machine learning

Mario A. Soriano et al.

Summary: The study utilized a hybrid approach combining physical-based and machine learning models to evaluate groundwater well vulnerability to contamination. Important predictors such as topography, hydrology, and proximity to contaminant sources were identified for accurate predictions. Results suggest that future groundwater contamination incidents are likely to increase if safeguards against contaminant releases are relaxed.
