Emission characteristics, sources, and airborne fate of speciated organics in particulate matters in a Hong Kong residence

Yunxi Huo et al.

Summary: A growing number of studies warn of the adverse health effects of indoor particulate matters (PM). However, little is known about the molecular compositions and emission characteristics of PM-bound organics (OM) indoors, a critical group of species with highest concentration and complexity in indoor PM. This study found that indoor activities significantly elevated the concentration and fraction of OM in indoor PM, but the total PM-bound OM concentration outdoors was higher than that indoors during undisturbed periods. Combustion or high-temperature processes during indoor activities significantly increased the indoor-to-outdoor (I/O) ratios for most organic species, and other factors such as gas-to-particle partitioning and secondary formation also influenced the I/O ratios.

Children Health Risk Assessment of Metals in Total Suspended Particulate Matter (TSP) and PM1 in Kindergartens during Winter and Spring Seasons

Anna Mainka

Summary: This study evaluates the health risks related to heavy metals and metalloid in indoor dust samples collected from Polish kindergartens. The research found that the concentration of carcinogenic Cd in PM1 exceeded permissible limits, presenting a high health risk for preschool children. High cumulative non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were observed, indicating a concerning level of health hazards from trace elements in airborne particles.

Characterising and communicating the potential hazard posed by potentially toxic elements in indoor dusts from schools across Lagos, Nigeria

Abimbola O. Famuyiwa et al.

Summary: Indoor and ambient air pollution leads to an estimated 7 million premature deaths globally each year, posing a significant contemporary public health challenge. Environmental monitoring can play a crucial role in rapidly growing cities like Lagos to establish baseline data, monitor pollution trends, and educate the public on environmental issues. Results from dust samples collected in classrooms in Lagos showed that the indoor environment was largely uncontaminated.
