Bioenergy sorghum as balancing feedback loop for intensification of cropping system in salt-affected soils of the semi-arid region: Energetics, biomass quality and soil properties

Arvind Kumar Rai et al.

Summary: This experiment tested the effects of reduced tillage, deficit irrigation, and mulching on root zone salinity and the performance of bioenergy sorghum. The results showed that these measures can effectively increase the intensity of cropping systems, and bioenergy sorghum can be a candidate crop in rotation with saline water irrigated wheat in a semi-arid region.

Global patterns in mycorrhizal mediation of soil carbon storage, stability, and nitrogen demand: A meta-analysis

Yuntao Wu et al.

Summary: Understanding the impact of mycorrhizal fungi on soil organic matter (SOM) storage and stability is crucial. This study found that ecosystems dominated by ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungi have higher soil carbon (C) storage and C: N ratio compared to ecosystems dominated by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. The study also suggests that most C in EcM ecosystems is distributed in the relative labile particulate organic matter fraction (POM), making SOM in these ecosystems more vulnerable to disturbances caused by land use and climate changes.

Phosphorus nutrition of oats genotypes in acidic soils: Exploiting responsive plant-microbe partnership

Arvind Kumar Rai et al.

Summary: The study found that utilizing genotype-microbes interactions in the rhizosphere can enhance P nutrition of crop plants in acidic soils, especially for oat crops. The Kent genotype showed higher response to both microbes and P fertilization, with stronger correlation to microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the soil, leading to increased P uptake. Additionally, using 50% recommended dose of P fertilizers or tri-calcium phosphate in acidic soils can be a cost-effective option for efficient P nutrition.

Deficit saline water irrigation under reduced tillage and residue mulch improves soil health in sorghum-wheat cropping system in semi-arid region

Pooja Gupta Soni et al.

Summary: In arid and semi-arid regions with limited access to freshwater, judicious use of saline water can be a practical solution for meeting crop water demand. Implementing deficit saline-water irrigation, reduced tillage, and straw mulching can enhance crop yields, maintain soil health, and save freshwater resources without compromising productivity in the sorghum-wheat system. This integrated approach offers potential for sustainable agriculture and land restoration in salt-affected areas of arid and semi-arid countries.

Colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi improves salinity tolerance of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) seedlings

Chaiya Klinsukon et al.

Summary: The study showed that AMF improved the growth and survival of eucalyptus seedlings under saline conditions by increasing chlorophyll content and K/Na ratio while decreasing leaf proline concentration. Pre-inoculation with AMF also significantly enhanced plant performance by more than 30% compared to non-inoculated plants, indicating that AMF can mitigate the negative effects of salinity on plant physiological and biochemical parameters.

Impact of Mycorrhization on Phosphorus Utilization Efficiency of Acacia gummifera and Retama monosperma under Salt Stress

Abdessamad Fakhech et al.

Summary: The impact of salt stress on the growth and phosphorus utilization efficiency of two leguminous species was studied, along with the effectiveness of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in mitigating salt stress. Results showed that salt stress inhibited the growth of legume species and reduced phosphorus and nitrogen uptake. Inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi helped to alleviate the effects of salt stress, increasing growth and phosphorus uptake responses in both species.
