An ignored potential microplastic contamination of a typical waste glass recycling base

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: The waste glass recycling base may produce various pollutants such as particulate matter, heavy metals, and microplastics, which interact with each other and could potentially pollute the surrounding areas. The study identified 59 polymer types of microplastics in the sampling sites, with different treatment processes releasing different types of pollutants. It was estimated that the annual load of microplastics in the waste glass recycling site is about 3.211 tons.

Characteristics of unorganized emissions of microplastics from road fugitive dust in urban mining bases

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the emission characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in road fugitive dust from two urban mining bases and establishes emission inventories. The results show that the waste glass recycling base and e-waste dismantling plant emit approximately 1265.53 g and 40.5 g of MPs into the atmosphere each year, respectively, with the highest proportion being tire micro-rubber. Heavy vehicles contribute significantly to MP emissions. The study provides guidance for air pollution prevention and control.

Microplastic pollution and ecological risk assessment in an estuarine environment: The Dongshan Bay of China

Zhong Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigated microplastic (MP) pollution in the surface water of Dongshan Bay in southern China, finding that the main sources of MPs were PE, PP, and PS foam, leading to a minor ecological risk. The research results provided baseline data and ecological risk assessment methods for MP pollution in Dongshan Bay.

Estimation of waste outflows for multiple product types in China from 2010-2050

Xianlai Zeng et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the generation of product waste in China and proposed a systematic estimation model to assist further environmental research, waste management policy-making, and technology development. By predicting future consumption and considering social regulation, the study produced estimated data on typical technological product waste outflows.

Effect of novel sucrose based polyfunctional monomer on physico-mechanical and electrical properties of irradiated EPDM

A. Abdel-Hakim et al.

Summary: The addition of a novel sucrose based polyfunctional monomer (SPF) as a co-agent in the radiation crosslinking of EPDM improved the crosslink density, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of EPDM. The incorporation of SPF also resulted in a decrease in dielectric constant and an increase in electrical resistivity of EPDM with increasing SPF content.

Sorption of chemical contaminants on degradable and non-degradable microplastics: Recent progress and research trends

Fernando G. Torres et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sorption behavior of chemicals on microplastics and their impact on the environment. It was found that degradable microplastics have a higher affinity for hydrophobic contaminants, but research on degradable microplastics is still limited.

Pollution of plastic debris and halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) in soil from an abandoned e-waste recycling site: Do plastics contribute to (HFRs) in soil?

Jiecong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution of halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) in plastics and soil from an abandoned e-waste recycling site. The results suggest that plastics in soil contribute little to human exposure risks to HFRs, but may pose ecological risks to terrestrial wildlife in e-waste sites.

Atmospheric-pressure plasma treatments of NBR for the improvement of adhesion in footwear applications

Rodolfo Mugica-Vidal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of atmospheric-pressure air plasma treatments on the adhesion between nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and leather parts, finding that treated NBR exhibited higher bond strength, especially plasma-activated and mechanically roughened NBR showed the most durable adhesion improvement.

Characterization of solid, liquid and gaseous products from waste printed circuit board pyrolysis

Weifang Chen et al.

Summary: The non-metallic fraction of waste printed circuit board (WPCB) was found to be valuable after metal recovery, rich in organic polymer and inorganic materials which could serve as a source of chemicals and fuel. Through pyrolysis under different conditions, solid, liquid, and gaseous products were collected and characterized, showing that the products contained phenol, alkylated phenols, CO2, CH4, and H2. Pyrolysis pathways of WPCB disintegration were proposed based on the compositions of the products.
