Effective E. coli inactivation of core-shell ZnO@ZIF-8 photocatalysis under visible light synergize with peroxymonosulfate: Efficiency and mechanism

Yanni Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, core-shell ZnO@ZIF-8 nanomaterials were synthesized and utilized for photocatalytic bacterial inactivation using peroxymonosulfate under visible light irradiation. The results showed that ZnO@ZIF-8 exhibited higher charge separation efficiency and oxidation ability, leading to rapid and thorough disinfection of bacteria. Furthermore, the study revealed that the damage to bacterial cells was caused by reactive oxygen species generated through oxidative reactions and intracellular processes.

In-situ synthesis of N, S co-doped hollow carbon microspheres for efficient catalytic oxidation of organic contaminants

Yongbing Xie et al.

Summary: Metal-free heteroatom doped nanocarbons, such as N, S co-doped hollow carbon microspheres, have been studied as promising alternatives to metal-based materials for catalytic ozonation of aqueous organic contaminants. This study investigated the synthesis and catalytic performance of N- and S-doped hollow carbon microspheres and found that the N-2-annealed NSCs exhibited higher catalytic activity compared to single-walled carbon nanotubes. The activity enhancement was attributed to the synergistic effect between graphitic nitrogen and thiophene sulfur, as well as the nanoconfinement effects provided by the hollow structure within the microspheres.

Pivotal roles of N-doped carbon shell and hollow structure in nanoreactor with spatial confined Co species in peroxymonosulfate activation: Obstructing metal leaching and enhancing catalytic stability

Zelin Wu et al.

Summary: Metal leaching and catalytic stability are important issues in Fenton-like reactions. In this study, a hollow yolk-shell nanoreactor (HYSCN) was fabricated to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ). The HYSCN showed reduced metal leaching and improved catalytic stability compared to a solid structure (SCSCN). The mechanism of the HYSCN/PMS system was investigated and the degradation pathway of CBZ was proposed using UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS.

Sustainable Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycles triggered by co-catalyst of weak electrical current in Fe(III)/peroxymonosulfate system: Collaboration of radical and non-radical mechanisms

Xianhu Long et al.

Summary: In this study, an electrochemical system was used as a co-catalyst to enhance the activation of peroxymonosulfate for efficient degradation of Sulfamethoxazole. The collaboration of radicals and non-radicals oxidation was found to be responsible for the degradation, with singlet oxygen and Fe(IV) surprisingly involved in the system. The relative contributions of various reactive oxygen species were calculated, and multiple degradation pathways for Sulfamethoxazole were proposed.

Novel lignin-based single atom catalysts as peroxymonosulfate activator for pollutants degradation: Role of single cobalt and electron transfer pathway

Yuanfeng Qi et al.

Summary: A nitrogen coordinated Co single-atom catalyst was fabricated using lignin as carbon sources through a one-pot pyrolytic strategy. The isolated Co atoms in the SA Co-N/C architecture served as the main active sites for naproxen degradation, exhibiting exceptional performance with a high turnover frequency. Electron transfer induced by the single-atom Co sites was identified as the dominated mechanism for the NPX degradation.

Engineered carbon supported single iron atom sites and iron clusters from Fe-rich Enteromorpha for Fenton-like reactions via nonradical pathways

Lijng Peng et al.

Summary: Enteromorpha, a seawater pollutant, was converted into a functional carbocatalyst for Fenton-like reactions. The Enteromorpha-derived Fe-N-C exhibited high activity in activating peroxymonosulfate for organic pollutant degradation. Single Fe atoms played a crucial role as dominant reactive sites in forming highly oxidizing Fe-IV=O and Fe-V=O species.
