Identifying optimal cycles in quantum thermal machines with reinforcement-learning

Paolo A. Erdman et al.

Summary: This study introduces a general framework based on reinforcement learning to discover optimal thermodynamic cycles that maximize the power of out-of-equilibrium quantum heat engines and refrigerators. By applying this method to three different systems, the researchers discovered novel and breakthrough optimal control sequences.

The Ising critical quantum Otto engine

Giulia Piccitto et al.

Summary: We study a four-stroke Otto engine with a quantum Ising chain as the working fluid. The thermodynamic cycle consists of sweeps of the transverse magnetic field and thermalisation strokes with reservoirs at different temperatures. The system-environment coupling is modelled using a nonlocal Lindblad master equation. We find that the engine can operate in four different modes and exhibit enhanced thermodynamic performance near the critical point.

Optimal control of quantum thermal machines using machine learning

Ilia Khait et al.

Summary: In this study, we develop a deep learning framework with differentiable programming to discover optimal quantum control protocols under strict constraints. Utilizing neural network representations and exact gradients, we find high-quality solutions for the optimization problem of finite-time thermodynamical process in a quantum thermal machine. Using this DL algorithm, we identify a fundamental flaw in the previously used intuitive energetic cost of the thermal machine driving and resolve it with an alternative construction for the cost function. Our DL-quantum control framework can be applied to solve other quantum dynamics and thermodynamics problems.

A many-body heat engine at criticality

Thomas Fogarty et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that a quantum Otto cycle involving a transition of an ultracold gas between superfluid and insulating phases can outperform single particle cycles. Utilizing the energy gap and the interplay between lattice forces and particle distribution can lead to a many-body cooperative effect. Introducing an approximate shortcut to adiabaticity for efficient cycling around a critical point can help mitigate unwanted non-equilibrium dynamics.
