Effects of near-fault stress evolution and surface asperities on rough fault slip: An evaluation based on photoelastic shear tests and additively printed models

Yang Ju et al.

Summary: Fault slip caused by resource excavation activities can lead to earthquakes and rockbursts due to the redistribution of the near-fault stress field. The presence of asperities on natural faults makes it challenging to quantify the distribution and evolution of near-fault stress. In this study, photoelastic analysis and 3D printed fault models were used to explore the distribution and evolution of full-field stress in rough faults. The findings show that stress concentrations form near the upslope segments of asperities during fault slip, and the secondary principal stress difference (SPSD) can effectively characterize the effect of surface asperities on the slip of rough faults.

Estimation of Fracture Orientation Distributions from a Sampling Window Based on Geometric Probabilistic Method

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: Accurate orientation distributions are crucial for generating a reliable discrete fracture network (DFN) model for rock mass. The proposed method for estimating 3D fracture orientation distributions reduces sampling bias and is compared with Terzaghi family methods, showing a good match with true distributions. Additionally, the method is validated with stochastic fracture networks, demonstrating significant results in estimating continuous orientation distributions.

Upscaling of fractured rock mass properties - An example comparing Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) modeling and empirical relations based on engineering rock mass classifications

D. Gottron et al.

Summary: This study compares Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) modeling with empirical relationships based on conventional engineering rock mass classifications to determine the elastic properties of fractured rock masses. The results show that incorporating intact rock properties in addition to classification scores in empirical equations yields more reliable estimates for predicting fractured rock mass properties.
