Scale effect of shear mechanical properties of non-penetrating horizontal rock-like joints

Yifan Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the scale effect of shear mechanical properties of non-penetrating horizontal rock-like joints through numerical calculations and physical experiments. It found that the persistence ratio of the joint significantly affects the scale effect of joint shear strength, with different patterns for different types of joints.

Physical reconstruction and mechanical behavior of fractured rock masses

Ke Zhang et al.

Summary: The integration of 3D printing and water-soluble casting is presented for preparation of rock-model specimens containing complex fracture networks. The methodology has distinct advantages for replicating rocks with accurate fracture networks, repeatable mechanical properties, high strength, and brittleness of rock matrices. Nonlinear mechanical responses, including strain-softening and anisotropy, are observed due to the presence of complex fracture geometries in the fractured rock-model specimens.

Characteristics and mechanism of a landslide at Anqian iron mine, China

Shu-wei Sun et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the mechanism and failure characteristics of a landslide accident at the Anqian Iron mine caused by heavy rainfall, including the division of the landslide area and the formation process. Through field investigations and numerical modeling, it was found that heavy rainfall triggered the previously stable slope to slide, with the safety factor obtained by three-dimensional analyses slightly higher than that obtained by plane problem analyses.

Study on Representative Volume Elements Considering Inhomogeneity and Anisotropy of Rock Masses Characterised by Non-persistent Fractures

Wenliang Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the inhomogeneity and anisotropy of rock masses, which lead to spatial and directional effects in RVE size, necessitating improvements in traditional RVE determination methods. By considering the special characteristics, geometric and mechanical RVE sizes are determined with a coefficient of variation, and a relationship between them is established.

Strength test of 3D printed artificial rock mass with pre-existing fracture

Youyu Wang et al.

Summary: The study utilized 3D printing technology to create rock samples with discontinuous structural planes, revealing that discontinuities significantly lower the strength of rock mass models, while the angle of the joint has a trend of first decreasing and then increasing the uniaxial compressive strength. Additionally, shear testing showed that an increase in joint surface roughness enhances the shear strength of rock mass models.
