Structural control within flawed rock specimens under external loading as visualized through repeating nucleation on multiple sites by acoustic emission (AE)

Qiquan Xiong et al.

Summary: The role of artificially prepared flaws as controlling structures in the rock fracture process has been investigated, and two fundamental mechanisms, namely interlocking parallelogram (IP) control and single-large-structural (SLS) control, have been observed. These mechanisms have a wide range of applications and can potentially coexist at different length scales.
