An anisotropic phase-field approach accounting for mixed fracture modes in wood structures within the Representative Crack Element framework

Dennie Supriatna et al.

Summary: This paper presents a modeling approach for wood failure by incorporating a mixed-mode fracture mechanism into an anisotropic phase-field method. The method considers the distinctive fracture resistance and phase-field driving energy under different load modes. The results show good agreement with experimental evidence and potential future perspectives are discussed.

Modeling approach to estimate the bending strength and failure mechanisms of laminated timber beams

Christoffer Vida et al.

Summary: The numerical simulation of four-point bending tests on glued laminated timber (GLT) beams requires an adequate description of the material behavior and relevant failure mechanisms. This paper proposes a modeling approach to reliably estimate the bending strength and failure mechanisms of GLT beams, which is validated by simulating experimentally tested GLT beams. The results show the importance of considering discrete cracks and the variability of knot geometries in accurately simulating the failure mechanisms of GLT beams.

A hybrid multi-phase field model to describe cohesive failure in orthotropic materials, assessed by modeling failure mechanisms in wood

Sebastian Pech et al.

Summary: Fracture mechanics is crucial for efficient designs in engineering applications. The phase field method is a promising approach for simulating complex fracture phenomena. This study expands the original method to account for orthotropic behavior and preferable fracture planes. The proposed hybrid phase field approach is able to realistically reproduce complex failure modes in anisotropic, inhomogeneous materials.
